Cover reveal! The keywords I sent the press were “historical,” “natural,” and “multimedia” and I’d say they nailed it. Featuring my (book’s) main man Humphry Repton on the left there. Coming from Yale University Press this fall.
Image of a book cover with the title The Book of Improvement, subtitle Media Landscapes in the Global Enlightenment, and author Rachael King. The cover features a tree in the center with two men with surveying equipment to the left of the trunk and two men reclining under an umbrella to the right of the trunk. There are a river and rolling hills in the background.

Got it! of course, but the LLM can't get the pleasure of seeing its clever, tipsy verse written in a tavern published in a newspaper the next morning (as I like to imagine these poems having been). Or *can* it?

Just finished reviewing a splendid copyeditor's work on a new book. Feeling 1) grateful for the attention of a good copyeditor, who is rescuing my prose; 2) that I need to have a long talk with past me about keeping better track of my citations.

Lovely piece. When you say that All These Years volume 2 is "in production," well...... does that mean in ML's computer, or perhaps somewhere else? Interesting choice of words, I thought,

John O'Brien @johnobrien.bsky.social · 25/11/2025
Maconie says that volume 2 of All These Years is "in production." That's often a term of art for a book being in the hands of a publisher, going through copyediting, typesetting, rights clearance, etc. If that's the case, big news. If not, not. But a striking phrase nonetheless.

Percy Shelley should be living at this hour--and James Chandler, publishing this version of Shelley's "England in 1819" in Counter Punch, on April 21st, agrees. #Romanticism, #19thc
A version of Shelley's "England in 1819": "An old, bad, vain despised, and lying prez/ Cronies, sycophants, corrupt, and now in charge; / A tech czar, with a job chain-saw, at large; / A loony with a brain worm who now says:/ All the things that saved us will be banned--/ Flouride in our water, every good vaccine;/ Judges bought and sold, and courts unseen,/ To see that justice triumphs in the land/ In charge of schools, a monstrous wrestler's wife,/ Who's called AI "A 1"--a sauce for steak-/ And been herself 'instructed' how to break / The DOE, and higher ed, a vengeful strife--/Are graves from which some glorious phantom may/ Burst to illumine our tempestuous day."

I heard the NEA is only considering proposals related to 1776 & the USA’s 250th birthday & I was feeling intensely patriotic, so I’m printing these really big posters inspired *directly* by the Founding Fathers The cut was carved from the masthead of a 19th century newspaper
Two large posters on off white paper with blue ink reading:

NO TYRANTS!
& NO KINGS!

In large wood type font. There is a large image cut of a wooden printing press with a banner of text above it reading “THE TYRANTS FOE THE PEOPLES FRIEND”

For real though, there are a bunch of old sets that go for five figures
The image is a humorous meme featuring a classical painting of a man with white hair depicted in two panels.

Top panel: The man looks contemplative, with text reading, “When I was 9, I couldn’t afford that $110 Lego set,” followed by, “But now I’m an adult. I think I shall buy it.” A small inset image in the corner shows the box art of the “Lego Black Seas Barracuda 6285” set, featuring a pirate ship with red-and-white sails.

Bottom panel: The man now looks shocked while holding a piece of paper. Below him is a screenshot from an online listing for the same Lego set, labeled “Lego Black Seas Barracuda 6285 MINT New condition 1989 original…” with a price of $19,089.00. The listing also notes “or Best Offer,” “Free local pickup,” and “18 watchers.”

The meme humorously contrasts childhood aspirations with the reality of adult purchasing power and the inflated value of collectible items.
