Local authorities don't design for middle-aged men riding for sport. If you only get that demographic, it generally means you haven't provided cycle infra at all.

Very pleased to say the Rural Design Guide is published, we were the principal authors, working alongside WSP. Not all is strictly rural - some content is effectively an update to LTN 1/20, like the inclusion of Cyclops and more detailed guidance on transitions. Enjoy! www.gov.uk/government/p...

There's plenty of 50th celebration possibilities for cycle campaigning in London from this month - though some have gone by already.

Pedalling past the fiftieth anniversaries
The festival of fiftieth anniversaries for cycle campaigning in London has pedalled off in style with a ten minute video from ICAG - Islington Cycle Action Group (now Cycle Islington), one of the founding groups of London Cycling Campaign. This has plenty of footage from the time of cycling in the metropolis, plus progress in the borough to the present day.

A little bookshelf tidy prompted putting my complete collection of London Cycling Campaign @londoncycling.bsky.social magazines into filing boxes. Henri wanted to join in (also coming from LCC after all) - both he and the first issue are looking a bit tired, dog-eared even?

What seems hopeless when passively observed by isolated individuals gives way to a sense of encouragement and possible change when people get organised together behind a shared cause.'

With leaf fall well underway & twigs/branches from storm damage lying near the edge of the road it’s time to remind drivers that bike users will be taking the lanes. This is national #roadsafety week but our road safety agencies are silent on this hazard.

The running time may be offputting but the way the music has been weaved in gives it momentum (and pleasure in amongst the politics). Comfy seating in Malvern Theatre's cinema also helped! Highly recommended.

New housing estates in England are like jigsaw puzzles with the most important pieces missing: 🚍 Modern public transport 🚉 New stations, metros, trams and integrated buses 🚲 Safe and convenient active travel Read how we can make things better in our new report: buff.ly/IfS8Fqs
"Wherever your new home is, you should be able to go out the front door, and know that there are local amenities to walk to and turn up and go public transport available that connects you to a whole network of destinations. What our report found was that the current planning system is simply not delivering this vision. We need to bring the planning of new homes and sustainable transport together to create places that give people genuine choice about how they travel.” - Steve Chambers, Sustainable Transport Campaigner at Transport for New Homes

Heralding an error
Ancestry's recent addition of UK Heraldic Card Index 1150-1850 records {1} almost passed me by, but why not see if there is an entry for second cousin nine times removed John Howse/Howes, who attained high rank in Norfolk (early 1700s)? A very quick search did indeed find an entry, described as part of "Modern Armory Cards from Various Sources" - so time to download both sides of the card for later use.

Shows painted zebra crossing on a side road. There is a new traffic island in the middle of the road. To the left of the zebra crossing is a main road. There are offices immediately in the background, further down the main road and behind a handful of trees
