I really like Pluribus, but I can't help but be nagged by just how incurious Carol is about the nature of the world and how it operates in the swarm. I realize it suits her character to be misanthropic and solely dedicated to reverting things mostly because --

Y'know how in Dante's Inferno, the lowest rung of Hell is frozen and is reserved for betrayers, who are chewed in Lucifer's three mouths for eternity? I think the insurance co doctors who deny patients medicine and care they need to get paid exorbitantly go there. They betray their oath every day.

These people don't have friends, they have useful and not useful people that can either be exploited or dismissed. Everything is transactional, so there are no real human connections, and everyone is seen through a lens of hyper, sociopathic utilitarianism.

When I was a Hill staffer in 2009, a Dem trifecta was trying to pass universal healthcare. In response, Senate GOP released a memo detailing all of the tactics they in the minority could use to delay the effort as much as possible. I'm recirculating that 2009 GOP memo here. Take inspiration from it.

I'll give you bits of the letter I sent to my nephew on his 18th birthday:
I have hurt myself in my stupidity and foolishness over and over again, and no amount of advice will prevent those same types of experiences from happening to you. Not because you’re dumb, but because you’re bright and thoughtful and you want to see what the world has to offer. People like that, like you and me, can find such extraordinary beauty and joy, but also deep nadirs of sorrow. The two are inextricably linked, and that’s the way it should be. When you seek the best, the greatest, the most of anything, you must know its opposite to appreciate how grand it is.People say to be yourself, and that’s true. But be the best version of yourself. Don’t put on a face for people, don’t behave how you think others want you to behave just to please them. That doesn’t mean to not be mindful of your own behavior, or that you’re perfect just the way you are. None of us are perfect, and we never will be. It’s the ascent to attempt perfection that makes us better than we were before, and that’s all that matters. I don’t think I need to tell you this, I’m sure you’re always you all the time, but we all have ways to be more thoughtful, more kind, more considerate, more loving, more engaged, more this and that.Romantic love is intense and beautiful and the most extraordinary thing any of us can ever experience. It is the highest good we as human beings can achieve, but it can be hard to keep, difficult to know when it’s right, and needs maintenance and thoughtful consideration of each other. This isn’t always possible, but it should always be the goal.

You will think someone is right and most likely be wrong. It will hurt when you realize this, and I’m sorry for that. You’ll grow and be better from it.Sometimes people who are older or in a more powerful position will try to take advantage of you for their own gain. Sometimes you’ll know this is happening and consider doing it anyway just to advance. No one I’ve known, myself included, has ever been happy they made that calculus and sacrificed their dignity in service of their dreams. But there are times you have to do this just to survive. There’s no shame in forging ahead to keep food on the table, just never be complacent and never let someone get the better of you for too long if you can help it, even if it’s more comfortable than the uncertainty of being on your own. Comfortable misery is no comfort at all.

Gen Z is apparently surveiling themselves??? They've done a self Orwell?
The image contains a tweet from Michael Brendan Dougherty discussing the impact of the app Life360 on teenagers. It highlights how Life360, initially designed for parental monitoring, has turned into a tool of constant social surveillance among high school students. The tweet mentions that the app can track a vehicle’s movements, like hard stops, and shows how it creates a "social panopticon," where friend groups face tension if location tracking is disabled for even a short period. Michael expresses disbelief at how such monitoring would have affected his own adolescence.

A follow-up reply describes a scenario where a girl suspected her boyfriend of turning off his location for dubious reasons, only to find out he was planning a surprise for her. Michael critiques the app for promoting "paralyzing" levels of information sharing.

Below the replies is a TikTok screenshot showing the Life360 app interface, with a user questioning someone’s location in a parking lot at 2 a.m. The hashtags include #Life360, #TikTok, and #LocationSharing.

Second Image:

Matthew Schmitz's quote: “Wearing a red cap doesn’t make you MAGA.” He is plotted in the top-right quadrant, indicating strong approval of both delivery and plans.

That's not a super great chart to see for the flu.
The image shows a chart titled "Influenza A, Los Angeles, CA," indicating the quantity of nucleic acids detected at the Hyperion Water Reclamation Plant (HWRP). The x-axis represents time (from October 2023 to early 2025), while the y-axis shows the quantity of nucleic acids (PMPvo normalized per 1 million). The orange line shows a sharp increase in influenza presence toward the end of 2024 and into early 2025 after a previous peak in late 2023.
