Every morning my four-year-old and I “race” to see who can finish brushing teeth the fastest. We both have electric toothbrushes with built in two-minute timers, and I always put his toothpaste on first. Every day I wonder if today will be the day he realises. But today, he won again.

I just typed "I woke up in a king sized bed, tick of a clock, stranger to my left" into Google because I wanted to look up a song (looks like it's called 'Trophy Wife' by Zorro, btw), but Google has launched me into some Zork-esque interactive fiction? What is this?
AI Overview The digital numbers of the alarm clock glow a faint, harsh green against the dark: 4:17 AM. Every tick of the analog clock on the wall feels heavy, vibrating in the quiet room. You are lying in a massive king-sized bed, the sheets crisp, unfamiliar, and smelling faintly of lavender and old wood.To your left, the blankets rise and fall with the slow, even breathing of a complete stranger. What Your Senses NoticeThe Room: High ceilings, heavy velvet curtains blocking the window, and a single suitcase sitting zipped by the door. The Stranger: Face turned away, buried under a thick duvet. You can only see a shock of dark hair and a sliver of a gray t-shirt.Yourself: Your head throbs with a dull ache, and your right wrist sports a plastic, neon-yellow wristband with faded barcode lines. You don't remember checking into a hotel, and you certainly don't remember who is sleeping next to you. What would you like to do next?Check the nightstand for your phone, wallet, or clues.Gently shake the stranger's shoulder to find out who they are.Slip out of bed quietly and inspect the neon-yellow wristband in the bathroom light.Do something else (tell me what you want to try).

i didnt even look at the new iphone benchmarks until now. What the fuck do you mean single core performance score is MORE THAN DOUBLE my PC. What the fuck do you mean the multicore performance is identical when i have 16 cores. Stop feeding the apple engineers so much cocaine. This is so fucked

Bought some Lindt Salted Caramel the other day, kept it in the cupboard. By the time I came to eat it, it had done something I can only reasonably describe as “delamination”, and all the delicious salty caramel filling spilled all over the work surface in the kitchen. So, yes.

You might well be right! Personally I’m not against the idea of watermarking, but “the output is not what the model would have selected without interference” is at least a valid argument against it. Whether the argument has merit or not is another question.
000
Joe @joeinn.es · 14/08/2026
So from what I understand, they take half of the AIs vocabulary and make it X% more likely to appear than the other half. Then you can compare the ratios of those words in output and see if it matches. But it does necessitate output changes, which *implies* quality differences.

Joe @joeinn.es · 14/08/2026
So that’s one take, and probably a lot of folks would like to take credit for the work their LLM does. Another reason is that creating a textual watermark means intentionally changing what the model would naturally come up with, and that second one I do think would be helpful to understand better.

And don’t forget: we’ve (mostly) all got LLMs too, so why did *you* (and your LLM) make this particular contribution?
000
Joe @joeinn.es · 10/08/2026
If you and your agent find 100 things, great! Fork the repo, prep your branches and wait. Once your first 3 PRs get merged, you’ll have plenty of candidates for your next 3. Find out where the devs hang out: Discord, BlueSky, Twitter… OSS is a community and we value folks who care.
110
Joe @joeinn.es · 10/08/2026
I get the point, but I think scare quotes are unnecessary, and do we expect fresh developers not to use AI at all? A more positive spin: If you’re a new contributor to a project, pick two or three things that really matter, fix them, and show why you care with a well written PR description.

Joe @joeinn.es · 09/08/2026
It’s also wrong even if LLMs did work like that. Imagine the following training mini-corpus. The man walked home. The dog eats dinner. The man eats dinner. An LLM would be perfectly capable of producing “the dog walked home”, despite this never having been in the training material.
