#comics #webcomics This was an unwelcome surprise. Worked with Matt a couple of times, and found him cheerful & professional. I loved his writing, and he was the epitome of "independent comics artist". A real shame. If there is any justice, his comics will endure.

Found the Howarth-inked @thephilfoglio.bsky.social story in my handy copy of the XXXenophile Omnibus (still available from Discordia Culture Shop); it’s *four* pages but still! Here’s the first (and only SFW) page. Look at this and think “five minutes.” 😳

The first page of “R.U.R.or Are You Ain’t My Baby?” from the XXXenophile Omnibus, written & pencilled by Phil Foglio, inked by Matt Howarth with his distinctive elaborate hatching for shading. According to Phil, inking this entire four-page story took the legendarily fast Matt Howarth only around 20 minutes – less time than it would take most artists to ink a quarter of *one* page.

Aw man His work was amazing, and like no other. Also, he had great taste in music. He would put music review strips in the back of his books, and incorporate real musicians, like The Residents, as characters in his books. RIP

p much all edgelord comics now fall flat for me bc I was reading comics in the 80s and 90s that were sincerely experimental, challenging, brutal & unhinged—like Patton Oswalt talking about Open Mic Night “an issue got banned for the main character biting a baby in half” does kinda lap the field 😆

I went to the new Andy’s Frozen Custard that opened at Broadway & 410 and it was REALLY good I thought I was not much of a custard fan but apparently the problem was I had been eating inferior custard for years there are several locations now

Also – and this bears mentioning – Matt Howarth in his prime was UNBELIEVABLY fast. He drew entire issues over the weekend. He inked a six-page @thephilfoglio.bsky.social comic in (iirc) *twenty minutes*. RIP Matt Howarth. I liked your comics, and you made me feel better about being a slow artist.

Those Annoying Post Brothers started in the magazine Heavy Metal, and Howarth’s comic and its spinoffs (like Savage Henry) featured violent mayhem, alternate universe hopping, and sanctioned appearances by musicians like The Residents and Conrad Schnitzler. Howarth did album covers for some of them.

RIP Matt Howarth, writer/artist of the indescribable comic Those Annoying Post Brothers (and others). Howarth was known for both for his anarchic stories and minutely detailed art, often with elaborate hatching—and, incredibly, for being probably the fastest artist in ALL of comics.
