My fav new album this week is Levitation by the German 🇩🇪 electronic producer Struktur, another excellent release from the Brussels-based 🇧🇪 record label Maloca. Luscious beats and bells on an exquisitely crafted, hardly straightforward, minimal ‘techno’ album. maloca.bandcamp.com/album/levita...

I don't think I heard this before, very cool. Looking for a translation of the lyrics (while I was at it), I found that the original lyrics had been translated into Dutch for 🇧🇪 K3's 'Yeke Yeke' - but without the original melody and without any credits for Mory Kanté. www.youtube.com/watch?v=r0rV...

Fascinated & moved by viral footage of Parisian lycéens singing Charles Aznavour's "Emmenez-moi." Classic chanson of their grandparents' era—a hit in '68, no less—about working-class drudgery/dreams of escape, whose implicit politics these kids are making them explicit, in real time, in the street

I don't know if I would have been into Azanyah's spiritual gospel-folk-jazz in 1987 (I was more of a Public Enemy guy), but it's a proper golden beat 39 years later.

I suppose 'Ma Sacrée' by Hong Kong-via-Utrecht DJ/producer Gyrofield is a kind of techno record, only slower and much weirder. "Equally damning and life-giving, time blurring altogether between crashing beats," is how she describes it herself. Single of the Week! www.youtube.com/watch?v=z3dY...

I remember been totally mesmerized by 'Bang Zoom' at the time, it sounded like the greatest thing ever. Still holds up, and I still have the 7-inch single. ('I'm Chillin'' as well, actually! Go-Go was *it*, for a short while.) RIP Hitman Howie Tee.

Produced by Marcus Miller, who didn't play on the original, but did play on another track from the same Scritti Politti album.

The second half of the '80s is rife with pop music that is very obviously influenced by Scritti Politti's '84/'85 singles and 'Who's Johnny' is a prime example. Had to vote Run DMC though, I think Green would agree.

I like how Ego Trippin’ tells you the rapper’s name at the beginning of each verse. It’s in line with the concept and very helpful when you’re new to the group and don’t know yet who is who. I wish Wu-Tang had done that in the beginning haha. Also: the beginning of lyrical miracle type verbose rap?

18-year-old Rakim taking rap to the next level. Arguably took years for his peers to catch up, if they even managed. Unfortunately not a great live performer (like Run DMC and KRS-1, say), but an incredible record, which I didn't hear until they released the album in 1987. (Yes, this was my main.)
