I didn't have nearly the following that you did, but I too found that once I'd decided to walk away, I had no regrets. And it's spiraled way down since then from everything reliable that's been reported.

During the Philippine-American War, Filipinos fighting for independence dropped leaflets about the Sam Hose lynching in an attempt to persuade American Black troops to defect to their side.

No, I absolutely do not have time to dust off my copy of Debord and read that into the fact that Jim Crow lynchings ran the gamut from fully state-facilitated to state-permitted. I'll give you this little nugget though. The US had an international reputation.

At any rate, this response to @dwcongdon.com's original essay on polyamory is more or less non-responsive. It just re-asserts positions he already accounted for, engages with none of the nuances or implications, and essentially says little more than "nuh-uh." Pretty typical, sadly.

I think this is a great idea. I'm increasingly of the mind that immigration law doesn't make sense without a background understanding of empire that precedes 1898.

The government *still* isn’t tracking how often immigration agents detain U.S. citizens. We are. 500+ Americans have been handcuffed, held at gunpoint or held against their will in Trump’s second term. Our tally is almost certainly an undercount. THREAD (content warning: violence) ⬇️

Particularly important to get checked if you were vaccinated between 1963 and 1967/68. (I had mine checked a few years ago and was OK, but the vaccine used between those years did not provide permanent immunity for everyone.)

The fiscal year is over. The dying Social, Behavioral, and Economic division of NSF ended up awarding 90 total grants this year, as opposed to ~700-800 in recent past years. Source: grantwitness.org/nsf/analyses...
The graph shows the cumulative number of awards made by month across this fiscal year, as compared to the last 6 fiscal years. The line for this year is total flat until June, but then finally gets up to 91 by October. In prior years the increase starts building earlier and ends on average in the 700-800 range (with variability, last year was only between 400-500).

I don't doubt that there's some redundancy and waste, but at a lot of state institutions, a lot of smart people looked at stuff really hard during COVID and did everything possible to find efficiencies. There just is not a lot of room left.

Part of the problem is that when the state withdraws support, the university has two choices: cut the amount withdrawn, or seek other means of securing it. Your average faculty/staff person is busy doing their actual jobs and has no specific expertise . . .
