10 years after SiIvaGunner would've originally ended, if not for our short little Halloween and Christmas events, and here we still are. The channel's output is better than it's ever been and the team culture has shifted towards letting people do whatever they're passionate about.

like, this is a list of blindingly obvious things. at some point we need to ask: why wasn't this clear before?

And because I avoided this obvious debacle entirely by... having enough expertise to understand the limits of this tech beforehand, I am now considered "inexperienced" with it in comparison to those who had no such foresight.

This is very good but it's also very frustrating to have been effectively sidelined from the industry for this kind of take for years, by people who go "oopsie" now. brettcodes.com/beware/

But can Dan explain why my viewers are complaining about being served gambling ads that feature fully nude women, in ways that would get a streamer banned for violating TOS if they showed the same imagery? Where's MY brand safety, Dan?

Now I let it fall back
in the grasses.
I hear you. I know
this life is hard now.
I know your days are precious
on this earth.
But what are you trying
to be free of?
The living? The miraculous
task of it?
Love is for the ones who love the work.

But for self-hosted Gitlab instances, static-site generators, or anywhere where it makes sense that you can already run arbitrary Ruby code, it's very easy to add in language support without modifying Rouge itself - you just subclass a thing and use the parsing DSL.

jneen @jneen.ca · 22/09/2026
I can't *guarantee* that nobody has snuck AI code in there (same as anyone else) but I do my darndest. A rouge lexer (language support file) is written a Ruby DSL, and can eval arbitrary Ruby code. So allowing users to upload their own lexers on Gitlab etc would be a huge security problem.
110
jneen @jneen.ca · 22/09/2026
Not sure I understand the question, but the Rouge lexers are all maintained by me personally without the use of AI. AI is explicitly banned in the project (including a somewhat adversarial agents file to tell people who don't bother reading).

I've been working towards an untrusted-safe version of Rouge lexers for some time, (i.e. a custom format that can't actually execute code) but it's still in the design phase. The new keywords infrastructure in Rouge 5.1 should help quite a lot though.
220
jneen @jneen.ca · 21/09/2026
It depends! If you're self-hosted, it's pretty easy to make a Rouge plugin that adds a lexer. Gitlab's own hosted instance can't really do that though, since lexers are Ruby code, and it would be untrusted.

i was always pretty proud of the feature where you could put something like `*.foo gitlab-highlight=python` in your .gitattributes file and suddenly any .foo file would be highlighted as python.

jneen @jneen.ca · 21/09/2026
(the rest of gitlab's UI... ehhhh... and their recent AI-first rebranding and AI-psychosis layoffs notwithstanding) but Rouge has *much* more language support than the go highlighter that forgejo uses, and it makes me sad to think about sometimes.
120
jneen @jneen.ca · 21/09/2026
i love forgejo/codeberg deeply, but my one gripe is that gitlab had better syntax highlighting

Real talk, why half of the remaining games media is in Japan this week but no one can ever find a Japanese dev, consultant, journo or researcher to talk about Japan? Especially when we then get these experts who ignore the well-know fact that Japan has laws which make firing people extremely hard.

yeah and this might not be obvious but a thing i've noticed at work is that LLMs output code you kind of need an LLM to maintain. it's a huge pain in the ass to read for a person, they will put all kinds of extraneous shit in comments and develop weird names for things that no one understands

One reason the not-a-computer-science-expert on here who calls other people anti-vaxxers and "basically Ted K" for not credulously believing the science-fiction memes coming out of the foundation labs is so annoying is because he's literally just repeating computer pseudoscience by non-experts.

Technology being everywhere doesn’t mean it belongs everywhere. The tech industry wants us to believe that AI in early education is not only inevitable, but necessary. We don't see it that way. This week, we announced a moratorium on generative AI for public school students in 2-K to 8th grade.
We’re eliminating AI use for students in 2-K through 8th grade for the upcoming school year.
