Yikes. Women accounted for all of the job losses and all of the labor force decline in July, according to @nwlc.org
WASHINGTON — Women accounted for 100 percent of the decline in the labor force in July, according to a National Women’s Law Center jobs analysis of monthly data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That brings the total net number of women who have left the labor force since January this year to 845,000. In comparison, there are 406,000 fewer men in the labor force now than in January.

A total of 165,000 women, aged 20 and over, left the labor force last month — meaning they are neither working nor looking for work — while men's labor force participation was unchanged. Overall, the economy lost 23,000 jobs in July. Women accounted for all of these losses, losing 32,000 jobs, while men gained 9,000 jobs. Women make up 50.1% of the workforce.

1/ I looked at 20 years of Supreme Court decisions and found that for the first time, all nine justices decided more cases by secret ballot — aka the “shadow docket” — than it did for cases argued in open court last term. 🧵:
A line chart shows the number of Supreme Court decisions on the merits docket versus the shadow docket from the 2003-04 term to the 2024-25 term. The merits docket decisions trend downward over time, ending at 56 decisions, while the shadow docket decisions rise sharply in the 2018-19 term and surpass the merits docket in the last term at 63 decisions.

The Supreme Court's third decision is Mullin v. Otro Lado. Another 6–3 decision, this time allowing the government to "meter" asylum-seekers by forcing them to remain on the Mexican side of the border. All three liberals dissent. www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/25p...
JUSTICE ALITO delivered the opinion of the Court.
This case presents a straightforward question: whether
an alien1 who seeks to enter the United States2 from Mexico
“arrives in the United States” when he or she is still in Mexico. In the decision below, the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit answered “yes.” That is wrong.
In ordinary speech, no one would say that a person “arrives
in” a place—for example, a house, a city, or a country—before the person enters that place. The context in which the
phrase “arrives in the United States” is used in the immigration statutes at issue here supports an ordinary-meaning reading. So does the presumption against extraterritoriality. We therefore reverse.

Fun paper trying to quantify what countries lose when talented soccer players/footballers play for countries other than that of their birth, which authors describe as "leg drain" arxiv.org/pdf/2603.17336
Abstract: Brain drain—the emigration of skilled individuals toward higher-wage economies—
is a well-documented phenomenon, yet its aggregate economic cost remains difficult to
quantify because individual productivity is rarely observed. We offer a novel angle on
this measurement challenge by studying professional football, a global labour market
in which every participant carries a publicly observable, consistently estimated market
value. Using data on over 92,000 professional footballers worldwide from Transfer-
markt, we identify nearly 20,000 players with multi-national eligibility and compute
the implied transfer of human capital between countries. We find that the resulting
“leg drain” disproportionately benefits wealthy European nations—France alone gains
over €3 billion in player value—while African and Caribbean countries bear the largest
losses relative to GDP. Italy is the single largest net loser in absolute terms, driven by
the outflow of players with Italian heritage to Latin American national teams. A grav-
ity model of bilateral flows reveals that former colonial ties are among the strongest
predictors of leg drain intensity: countries with a colonial relationship to a major Euro-
pean footballing nation lose significantly more player value, even after controlling for
population and income. These findings provide a transparent, quantifiable analogue to
the broader brain drain debate and highlight how historical institutional links continue
to shape global talent redistribution.
