‼️ US now advocates for 🇺🇦 EU accession by 2027 as part of „peace plan“. I know many pro EU & pro 🇺🇦 people may support this. But I think it is a terrible idea. A few thoughts 💭 👇 www.theguardian.com/world/2025/d...

If you want to know why the capital of Central Europe became the city of ideas that created the modern world & what the house of Austria has to do with this I can recommend reading first Martyn Rady's "The Habsburgs" & then Richard Cockett's "Vienna" - 2 excellent & witty books.

Teaching Linz's "The Perils of Presidentialism" in U.S. presidential election years is the "eat your vegetables" part of being a comparativist
In countries where the preponderance of voters is centrist, agrees on
the exclusion of extremists, and expects both rightist and leftist
candidates to differ only within a larger, moderate consensus, the
divisiveness latent in presidential competition is not a serious problem.
With an overwhelmingly moderate electorate, anyone who makes
alliances or takes positions that seem to incline him to the extremes is
unlikely to win, as both Barry Goldwater and George McGovern
discovered to their chagrin. But societies beset by grave social and
economic problems, divided about recent authoritarian regimes that once
enjoyed significant popular support, and in which well-disciplined
extremist parties have considerable electoral appeal, do not fit the model
presented by the United States. In a polarized society with a volatile
electorate, no serious candidate in a single-round election can afford to
ignore parties with which he would otherwise never collaborate

The New York Times has published an editors’ note on its earlier coverage about the hospital in Gaza City:
The New York Times has published an editors note about its early coverage of an explosion at a hospital in Gaza City. Read the note in full here.On Oct. 17, The New York Times published news of an explosion at a hospital in Gaza City, leading its coverage with claims by Hamas government officials that an Israeli airstrike was the cause and that hundreds of people were dead or injured. The report included a large headline at the top of The Times’s website.

Israel subsequently denied being at fault and blamed an errant rocket launch by the Palestinian faction group Islamic Jihad, which has in turn denied responsibility. American and other international officials have said their evidence indicates that the rocket came from Palestinian fighter positions.

The Times’s initial accounts attributed the claim of Israeli responsibility to Palestinian officials, and noted that the Israeli military said it was investigating the blast. However, the early versions of the coverage — and the prominence it received in a headline, news alert and social media channels — relied too heavily on claims by Hamas, and did not make clear that those cla
