Never in my lifetime did I think that Kentucky would be a football state. But here we are. Hope this bodes well for women’s and men’s basketball this season.

Wanna see a cool little 🔥 ☁️? Meet the pileus. Latin for “cap” (think pileated woodpeckers), the MASTER (MODIS/ASTER Airborne Simulator) sensor on NASA's ER-2s, a type of high-flying research aircraft, captured this cloud over the Sand Creek Fire. science.nasa.gov/earth/earth-...

Current camera & emergency call-in’s by people report 🔥 within 15 mins or less in & near human-dominated landscapes (which the organizers of this XPRIZE admitted). Real talk: Why invest hundreds of millions of dollars to decrease that by 5 mins? (Though in this case, no competitor succeeded).

With CEQA lawsuits curtailed, some cities are expanding fire hazard zones to exempt land from housing laws - San Diego covers 5 times more area than state fire officials recommend. Ironically, blocking safer apartments pushes more building into riskier wildland edges. calhdf.org/is-fire-safe...

Today’s Fall Equinox at 8:05 pm ET marks the start of astronomical fall in the N. Hemisphere and is when the Sun is directly over Earth’s equator. Now through the Winter Solstice, the Northern Hemisphere will receive less ad less direct sunlight as Earth continues along its tilted orbit.

And to be fair, this mismatch of seeing and classifying the landscape in a similar way could be a timing issue, as Mr. Berry was 3 generations older than me and a product of a different geographical and cultural region, even if both “rural”.

Is Henry County, long a bedroom community to Louisville and Cincinnati/NKY, rural compared to eastern Appalachian Kentucky? I would say no. As a native of eastern KY. To me, his writings were always evocative - but called forth a Kentucky and history I was not from but learned of in books.

Jessica McCarty @jmccartygeo.bsky.social · 01/09/2026
I think the question is - Rural compared to what? The U.S. Census Bureau lists Henry County as an urban area: www2.census.gov/geo/maps/met... Kentucky urban areas maintain horse farms, remnants of cropped areas, bourbon distilleries even within city limits.

I think his writings echo the sense of loss of rural spaces/culture/belonging due to urbanization/exurbinization. I think he identified as rural because his home was still mostly rural when he was young, but would have shifted by his young adulthood. Totally usual human behavior.

Wendell Berry writings hit different when you are from Kentucky. At times his work has been incorrectly affiliated with Appalachia, but much of what he struggled with is cultural inheritance of the Old South. He was from and lived in the Louisville metro, the largest urban region.

Hawk Fire is also another example of a “wildland” fire that is threatening human communities beyond the immediate interface where our settlements meet rural & wild landscape (the WUI - Wildland urban interface). Every home & neighborhood in North America should be assessing fire and smoke risk.

If you're doing it wittingly that's fine no judgement.
A woman walking in the country while looking at her phone. Behind her is a heard of tarantulas. She has no idea. The text reads: Are you unwittingly leading a heard of goats? Put your phone away! Distracted walking sends people to the ER every year. Who knows what kind of power a human being leading tarantulas can amass. We don't even want to think about it.
