Two years feels like a long wait for a pub book with actual politics in it. Adding it to the list, though my local's beer garden is a much worse classroom than a proper book about it.

People who write about pubs tend to write about beer first then only reluctantly get onto pubs when it dawns on them they've been living through a permanently rolling pubs crisis which began before most of of them were old enough to drink. And then realise it's POLITICAL and don't write about pubs
Book cover

THE DEATH OF THE ENGLISH PUB,

By Christopher Hutt

Published 1973

Collage made up of lots of smaller images which are 24 different group photographs taken outside different pubs in different parts of the country: England - with the people being campaigners mobilising to save THEIR local pub

Currently in October 2026 Plunkett Foundation reports around 400 community groups trying to save their local Advert for Fuller's brewery new lager called FRONTIER

The image is of branded can glass and bottle each labelled

Fuller's Frontier London Premium Lager in black typeface on a bright yellow back ground

The SLOGAN

WE'LL NEVER SELL OUT in bold capital letters dominates the image, there are two clenched fists stylised drawings one either side of the image... One holding the neck of the bottles.

That Frontier independence campaign from 2018, the punchline: “We’ll never sell out.” in 2019 Fuller's announced the £250m sale of its entire brewing business — including Frontier — to Asahi.

Halfway through PUBS FOR THE PEOPLE by Amit Singh and Sivamohan Valluvan. It’s up there among the best books about pubs I’ve read - its certainly the most interesting. Early recommendation BUY THIS BOOK: It's out October 20, 2026. Pre-order see link manchesteruniversitypress.co.uk/9781526194541/
Image 1: A hand holds Pubs for the People: The Fight for the Pint and the Nation by sociologists Sivamohan Valluvan and Amit Singh inside a softly lit pub.

The cover resembles a traditional pub tabletop: a large red beer mat reads “PUBS FOR THE PEOPLE”, alongside a foaming pint, while a pub-sign-style panel carries the subtitle and authors’ names.

The busy pub behind is deliberately out of focus — an appropriate setting for a book that treats the Public House not as nostalgia, but as living social infrastructure: a place where people meet, mix and share space across differences, while asking who owns and controls these places and what kind of society pubs can help sustain.Image 2: The back cover of Pubs for the People, including a photograph of authors Sivamohan Valluvan and Amit Singh standing outside a pub with drinks in hand.

Biographical text describes Valluvan as a sociologist at the University of Warwick and Singh as a sociologist at University College London whose father, if he had been a son rather than a daughter, would have been a fourth-generation publican.

The description says the authors travel through Britain’s pubs while confronting private equity, gentrification and culture-war arguments about national identity.

It concludes that, in a world that can feel “lonelier, angrier and more despairing”, the pub offers the prospect of a “more equal, sociable and comfortably multiracial England.”Image 3:

Reviews / endorsements for Pubs for the People

Emma Warren, author of Up the Youth Club: “A clever, charming and powerfully convivial book.”

Kojo Koram, author of Uncommon Wealth: “Reminds us of the importance of protecting the Great British pub as a space where communities can share in kinship and merriment.”

Jonathan Nunn, writer and co-editor of Vittles: “Eschews nostalgia for what pubs used to be and celebrates them as a resilient format that has adapted to the needs of people today.”

Pete Brown, author of Clubland: “A bold reimagining of the pub as part of the solution to the radicalism and racial tension gripping Britain.”

Richard Seymour, author of Disaster Nationalism: “Brilliant: one of the sharpest, and strangest, books ever written about English nationalism.”

Laura Hadland, CAMRA Campaigner of the Year 2024: “Will fascinate the general reader and resonate deeply with the regular pub goer.”Image 4: Pubs for the People lies on a round wooden pub table beside a partly drunk pint of pale golden beer, with the softly blurred interior of the pub behind.

It is the book returned to the environment it examines: not simply pubs as businesses selling beer, but the Public House as an everyday shared space in which strangers and friends coexist, conversation happens and social connections form.

Valluvan and Singh connect that social role to the forces shaping who gets to keep, use and belong in these spaces — ownership, economics, class, race, gentrification and the continuing struggle over what the pub is for and who it is for.

Counterpoint: paying tax on your income is a marker of an inclusive, redistributive society. Everyone who doesn't pay tax is lined up in the sights of the right wing as a scrounger. Start it at 10%. Start it at 5% if you want. But don't pretend a high number of people *not paying tax* is good.

AND if you can find 10 minutes' spare have a read of this: My experience of Big Business' grip on the public house and what has to be done to overturn the #GreatBritishPubcoScam and the Pubs Crisis www.themintmagazine.com/a-few-too-ma...
Screenshot of The Mint Magazine website showing J. Mark Dodds’ article A few too many?, published 3 October 2025. The page is dominated by a close-up photograph of a pint of golden beer standing in a large spill of beer and foam, an image that echoes the article’s title. The piece recounts the experience of running an award-winning tied pub, the financial pressures of the pubco model, eviction from the Sun & Doves and the poverty and homelessness that followed, while examining the wider economics of Britain’s pub system. Written years later while recovering from the trauma of that experience, it turns personal history into an argument about the structural forces affecting publicans, pubs and communities — the same issues Dodds had been campaigning about for many years.

@boakandbailey.bsky.social In 2014 we corresponded about #GreatBritishPubcoScam but never had the conversation In 2017 you described my work exposing pubcos as “popular conspiracy theory” In 2025 I wrote about it www.themintmagazine.com/a-few-too-ma... In 2026 fancy having that conversation now?
20th Century Pub with passage

A composite image showing the cover of Jessica Boak and Ray Bailey’s 2017 book 20th Century Pub: From Beer House to Booze Bunker beside a photographed page headed

“POWER TO THE PEOPLE”.

Highlighted text introduces J. Mark Dodds with the words: “One popular conspiracy theory has it that pubcos deliberately drive marginally viable pubs into the ground to justify such sell-offs. Publican J. Mark Dodds is an outspoken campaigner for the rights of pubco tenants who views pubcos as ‘asset strippers’:

‘These [pub closures] are regarded as the isolated odd story of one pub or another that: “sadly is no longer economically viable” (according to the freeholder), even though there is a whole community up in arms about it, saying they NEED a pub, WANT a pub, and will put money into saving their pub, IF they get the chance to save it. And carpers-on say, “If you didn’t want to lose it you should have used it” – while completely missing the point that the pub was not used because it was deliberately run down to make it “unviable” and suitable for sale.’”

The framing is significant: a structural argument about pub-company ownership, underinvestment, decline and disposal is introduced as a “popular conspiracy theory”, rather than examined through the evidence behind it. Mark and Louis

J. Mark Dodds and his son Louis sitting outside a pub beneath a railway arch, two generations using the Public House as generations always have: meeting, talking, socialising and spending time together.

Mark looks rather judgmentally into the camera; Louis, behind him, looks similarly stern, with two partly consumed pints on the table.

There is another story behind this ordinary scene. Louis was born into and grew up in the shadow of the indentured labour of the tied-pub system experienced by his father and family: the lived experience that created the learning, campaigning and determination to overturn the paradigm.

The pub here is not an abstract “business unit”, but part of family life, community and the social infrastructure passed between generations.

Mark wrote about his position after being elected to the National Executive of CAMRA the Campaign for Real Ale for a four year term by popular vote in 2025

https://www.themintmagazine.com/a-few-too-many/ Rob Hopkins alongside Ece Temelkuran

Two images about the power of collective action.

The first quotes Rob Hopkins, founder of the Transition Towns movement: “If we wait for the governments, it’ll be too little, too late; if we act as individuals, it’ll be too little; but if we act as communities, it might just be enough, just in time.”

Beside it, a hand holds Ece Temelkuran’s book Together: A Manifesto Against the Heartless World in a busy pub (The Gowlett, SE15).

The ideas converge: Transition builds change through people organising where they live;

Temelkuran asks whether we have the stamina to begin the “immense work with small steps”, including “building a cooperative in our field of work, or strengthening mutual aid groups in our own communities”.

Both shift agency away from waiting for somebody else to solve things and towards people developing the capacity to act together.

Discussing the book, Temelkuran explains that we have been made to lose faith “in ourselves, in our political agency” and “in each other, in togetherness”; the book is about recovering that faith. In another interview she describes the alternative emerging through communities: when crises happen, people tend to help one another and act in solidarity.

The Forester Five, Deal

Five women: Megan Smith, Jane Kesley, Gemma Jackson, Becky Artmonsky and Pascale Colony standing together behind the bar of The Forester in Deal, Kent, surrounded by handpumps and beer taps.

They came together and united to prevent their hometown losing another longstanding local. They pooled their own savings to buy the pub. As of September 2026 they celebrated their first year of tenure - they report the first year has been exciting and successful and there's still much to do: Sea sauna in the back garden is one thing!

This is the abstract idea in the previous image of coming TOGETHER to make change happen made real: people acting together, locally, to preserve something their community values.

Or, in Ece Temelkuran’s words, beginning the “immense work with small steps”

Here “Free Trade” carries another meaning: freedom from ties, the security to choose one’s own path rather than having choices dictated by poverty or necessity — the kind of freedom and agency that a Universal Basic Income seeks to make real.A logo for the forthcoming All For The Love Of Pubs podcast — allfortheloveofpubs.co.uk — showing a large red heart entwined with green hops and barley, wrapped in a cream banner reading “ALL FOR THE LOVE OF PUBS”.

The logo was created and gifted to the project by Kerry Ford of the Pipe Makers Arms in Broseley, West Midlands.

Kerry's own story embodies much of what the podcast will explore: after experiencing the loss of voice and agency that can accompany poverty and life as a tied pub tenant, a remarkable virtuous circle of events means she is now preparing to reopen the pub as a free house. A radical turn of events!

All For The Love Of Pubs will use the Public House as a lens through which to explore freedom, security, participation and agency: how pubs create social capital, knit people together and give us places to meet, talk, disagree, organise and belong.

In this context, it connects with the idea behind Universal Basic Income: that genuine freedom requires enough security to have choices, a voice and the capacity to participate in the life around us.An infographic headed “A STRONGER FUTURE — FOR OUR PUBS, OUR COMMUNITIES, OUR PEOPLE”, setting out a six-stage journey from building the foundations of All For The Love Of Pubs through to national action.

It moves from creating a website, social media and podcast; to building an audience and coalition; raising £10 million through a million people contributing £10 each; establishing a public-benefit pub company; buying, restoring and retrofitting pubs; and returning them to long-term community stewardship. The final stages show thriving pubs as community infrastructure, stronger communities, climate action, better food, economic change and a fairer, more resilient society.

At its heart this is an argument about agency: what becomes possible when large numbers of ordinary people have the security, resources and means to act together rather than remaining isolated and powerless within an extractive rentier economy?

It connects directly to one of the foundational questions raised by Universal Basic Income: what might people do, individually and collectively, if freedom from poverty and economic precarity gave them genuine choices, time, voice and agency?

I've been researching the idea of Unconditional Universal Basic Income since 2013. Here's a collection of findings I've compiled from various UBI experiments and studies of cash transfer programs around the world. This will be a VERY LONG and ongoing thread focused entirely on empirical evidence. 🧵
OBSERVED EFFECTS OF UBI

No significant reduction in labor supply (38 studies meta-analysis)

Increased self-employment (301%) and part-time employment (17%)

Slight decrease in alcohol and tobacco use (31 studies meta-analysis)

New mothers extend their maternity leaves

Birth weights improve due to better maternal nutrition

Graduation rates and educational outcomes improve

Hospitalization rates decline (8.5%)

Crime goes down (15%–42%) especially illegal hunting (95%)

Domestic violence decreases (30%–51%)

Trust increases (13% in politicians | 6% in other people)

Home ownership rates increase (17%–26%)

Food security increases as does consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables

Improved cognitive functioning (43%) and personality traits (31%)

Savings go up, debts go down

Bartlett is a very strange fish. There's something deeply unnerving about him. All cuddly care and empathy up front, on top of an uncompromisingly ruthless drive for power, recognition, success and wealth Wonder why he frequently discusses narcissism and how to handle narcissistic behaviour. Eh?
Strange Fish

Photograph of a Flowerhorn cichlid fish.

The enormous swollen forehead of this flowerhorn cichlid is called the nuchal hump, a feature that seems to be involved in mate-attraction.

Cichlid fish are famous for their ability to form new species rapidly, which draws the attention of evolutionary biologists and fish breeders alike. Indeed, the flowerhorn is a selectively bred product of the aquarium trade, but has been released in several locations around the world and often has invasive tendencies.

Many cichlids are known for their high intelligence, strong personalities, and distinct territorial or aggressive behavior, particularly during breeding season.

Great White Shark.

The great white shark is the world's largest known predatory fish.

It has 300 teeth, yet does not chew its food. Sharks rip their prey into mouth-sized pieces which are swallowed whole.

The shark’s heavy, torpedo-shaped body allows it to cruise efficiently for long periods of time, and then suddenly switch to high speed bursts in pursuit of prey—sometimes leaping out of the water. It feeds on a broad spectrum of prey, from small fish, such as halibut, to large seals and dolphins.

As large and powerful predators, great white sharks play an important role at the top of the marine food chain.

Despite its fame and reputation, little is actually known about the great white shark’s biology and behaviour.
