Lesson learned from years in telly - it's infinitely easier to make an exciting-looking teaser or press release for a new series than it is to make that series into a subsequent hit. A teaser is looksmaxxed by lack of sustained contact with the public. Any political challenger is a press release.

This is a perfect distillation of why our country is in the mess it’s in and who is complicit in that mess: the Tory party, its backers and their rightwing media apologists. Power has not been held to account and, oh my god, isn’t the country paying heavily for that?
Extract from article:

While there are some honourable exceptions to this rule, it has become increasingly apparent to me that far from holding the powerful to account for their actions, most political journalism actively involves protecting and co-operating with that power.
That this is the case became particularly apparent over the past 15 years, during which the vast majority of British media organisations wholly failed at their supposed job of "holding the powerful to account".
Whether it's the ruinous decision to cheerlead for a decade of austerity, the failure to explain the obvious and likely impacts of Brexit, or the decade-long championing of a known liar whose unsuitabilities for high office were apparent to anyone who has ever worked with him, these years have been an object lesson in how most political journalism protects, rather than scrutinises, power.

Has the Times sacked its Media Correspondent? Scrolling through its news list and it’s missed a huge story involving the monarchy, journalist ethics and a billion pound cover up at a hugely powerful media organisation. Surely more important than whether dogs suffer from January blues?

I doubt any Troll here who’s trying to smear ⁦Keir Starmer about decade-old events will be interested to read these pages from my book about his record prosecuting rape gangs. But he’s done more to bring them to justice than Farage, Yaxley-Lennon - or Musk -will ever do.

This is an astonishingly ill-informed and amoral assessment for the political editor of the BBC to have reached, about someone spreading extremist conspiracy theories and using them to whip up hatred against elected politicians. I'd say I'm surprised, but sadly I'm not.

Have written about Starmer's speech- his best moment yet as PM. He implicitly identified what sits at the heart of this story: the emergence of a common UK/US online right, headed by the radicalised Musk. It is making extremist, until recently fringe politics mainstream in British conservatism.
