There is a moment at the very very end of Abdul El-Sayed's podcast with Ezra Klein (book recommendation section) where he talks about the idea of "speaking truth to pain" and this will be staying with me for an extremely long time. www.nytimes.com/2026/09/25/o...
But there’s also something about truth to pain. We talk a lot about truth to power, but I think it’s actually a lot harder to speak truth to pain. I say that as someone who went to medical school, realizing that in a lot of our politics right now, we’ve got to get a lot better at speaking truth to pain if we’re going to get through some of these challenges that we have.

What does “truth to pain” mean?

It’s one thing to look power in the eye and say: You’re wrong about this. But there’s a way in which pain is very difficult to reason with. Because when somebody is in their pain, they’re in their trauma. They see that pain, and they may not see what’s causing it.

I remember just very explicitly being in a trauma ward with a gunshot wound patient and watching this big guy with his hand on his gunshot wound. All the folks are trying to pull his hand off his pain, that point of his gunshot wound, this clear vulnerability.

And this emergency room doctor had the presence of mind to be like: Everyone, stop. And she looks him in the eyes, and she’s like: I get that really hurts, and I’m so sorry that you’re here. You don’t want to be here. We don’t want you to be here. But if you don’t let us fix this, you could die. So I’m going to take your hand, and I’m going to move it off, OK? Because I need to get there so that you can live.

She was speaking truth to pain. He understands he’s at the hospital, he needs care, but he also doesn’t want anybody to touch the wound. Which is a natural thing. And I think it is a really great metaphor for how we think about a lot of these challenges we talked about today.

It’s just a matter of time now, and mostly a matter of when the money runs out. There is no future for Anthropic or OpenAI at their current scale. Hyperscalers need $308bn of annual ai revenue - around the revenue of Microsoft - for 10% return on 2026 and 2027 capex. Could be more with cost of debt.

I think this is why so many folks are comfortable saying 'well, I never heard of this song' - because if Nashville had bothered to send 'Be Her' or 'I Can't Love You Anymore' to pop radio - you know, TOP TEN HITS, popular culture would have no choice but to acknowledge she's THE hitmaker in 2026.

Which is the same thing they've done with Ella Langley's other songs - Music Row runs on a formula with radio promotion that's pretty rigid when you look at the timelines. And here's the kicker: they didn't send ANY other Ella Langley songs to pop radio - ironic because 'Be Her' is a pop song!

And that's not where the story ends, because after Nashville gave it a proper run, they then dropped the song from country radio airplay, and it's only lasted this long because of the exceedingly rare shipment of the song to pop. Because country radio gives folks their season, and MOVES ON.

I'm going to add a few quick notes onto this: "Choosin Texas was a country radio thing, and I don't listen to that -" When I hear this, I know folks are just not tapped in and let me explain why: Ella Langley blew up first on streaming. Nashville radio was late to the punch in its success.

Force Majeure is generally used as a kind of “act of god” measure for energy companies when wars or weather makes it impossible to deliver service. In this case Oracle is using it as a means of saying it shouldn’t pay in the event the data center isn’t ready. It is completely unprecedented.
Oracle Corp. is moving to shield itself from racking up expenses on a massive data center being built in New Mexico, adding a fresh wrinkle to a project beset by opposition and regulatory setbacks.
The technology giant sent the project's developer, a unit of Blue Owl Capital Inc., a notice citing force majeure, according to people familiar with the situation. Rather than trying to walk away as the site's main tenant, Oracle is attempting to put off payments should the data center dubbed Project Jupiter get derailed and fail to come online in 2028 as planned, the people said, asking not to be identified discussing private matters.Even if the force majeure notice is intended as a precautionary step to win some wiggle room, it risks alarming lenders backing the project.
The debt tied to the development is already trading at stressed levels, below 90 cents on the dollar, according to a person with knowledge of the matter.
A group of about 20 banks provided an $18 billion loan to help fund the construction of the data center campus, one of several mega-debt deals that have helped bankroll the AI infrastructure boom.
The notice also stands to raise questions yet again about the resilience of data center leases.
Contracts often include a clause allowing customers to back out if service doesn't begin as scheduled. Earlier this year, Alphabet Inc's Google agreed to pay Elon Musk's SpaceX for computing power through mid-2029, for example, but reserved the right to terminate if it didn't gain access by a certain date.

Ten years of relentlessly hateful, comically elitist anti-democratic politics across the white people world, helpfully summarised. The wrong people are talking, the wrong people are deciding and it’s harming the careers of important people who actually matter. Smithers! Release the hounds
The incident fits a broader pattern in the discourse around 'free speech' and 'cancel culture': whatever comes from the top down is freedom; whatever comes from the bottom up is bullying and censorship. When Macklemore is dropped at the behest of the billionaire stadium owner Robert Kraft, it's an exercise of the freedom of businesses to 'demonstrate their values' by deciding whom to platform. But when Ed Sheeran's fans decide not to buy tickets to his performances, or even demand refunds, it's bullying, mob behaviour. Since most people are not billionaires and do not own stadiums, they can exercise meaningful power only collectively. The collective exercise of power must therefore be demonised.
