We have to be able in a democracy to be able to criticize our elected officials. We have to know what they are doing. We have to be able to make up our own minds, and say our opinions about those things. Those are the most cherished ideas of what a free press is supposed to mean. And so one of the other things that that's supposed to indicate about our system, and about our state of discourse, is a kind of courage and principle on the part of our public officials. They are supposed to be strong enough to be able to withstand criticism; to be able to withstand the fact that, sometimes, they will get negative coverage. They're not supposed to be so weak, or so cowardly, that they would simply want to silence any outlet, or any coverage, that they didn't like. And so I think a part that gets missed sometimes – and these actions of the president – is just how much they signal weakness, and how much they signal cowardice. Because what Trump is really saying is he is afraid – he's afraid of reporters, particularly female reporters, it seems. He's afraid of anyone who is not his lackey. And so, it's also an admission – it's admission that he is not strong enough for this position. He is not strong enough to be a leader of a democratic nation.
