In 2014, I interviewed a Columbia University student who went from class to class carrying the mattress she was raped on—a protest performance piece to remind college administrators what they put on her shoulders. Twelve years later, we still expect women on college campuses to carry that weight.

Black folks are being pushed out of the workforce & unemployment rates are at their highest since the pandemic. That's why we need a Federal Job Guarantee now more than ever. My bill will help America reach full employment & help achieve long-term economic security for all.
A graphic that reads:

How it started:

A Federal Job Guarantee has deep roots in American history and the civil rights movement.

It was a key component of FDR’s Economic Bill of Rights, and Black leaders and economists like Coretta Scott King and Sadie Alexander all advocated for guaranteed jobs.A graphic that reads:

How it’s going:

It’s been 63 years since the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, and it’s time we actualize their radical dream and legislative blueprint.

Today, we’re building on their legacy and introducing legislation to help reach full employment and achieve long-term economic security for all.A graphic that reads:

How it works:

A Federal Job Guarantee would create an enforceable legal right to a quality job on projects that meet long-neglected needs, including:

—care for children and seniors
—sustainable transit systems
—protecting the environment

It provides all adults seeking employment public jobs with wages no less than $25 an hour and strong union protections.A graphic that reads:

Our resolution:

—Creates a pathway to stable employment
—Helps close racial and gender income gaps
—Sets a new standard for quality jobs with dignified wages, safe working conditions, healthcare, and more
—Makes the economy more resilient and more inclusive

If we want better fashion culture in the US, we have to lower the cost of housing and commercial real estate, support independent craftspeople, build denser neighborhoods, improve walkability, and get rid of overly restrictive zoning laws. Let kook culture thrive.

a lot of churches, even ones that are "thriving" by typical diocesan standards of financial sustainability and community investment hang on to staleness because they are in survival mode afraid of losing their charism they avoid small risks imagining them to be larger than they are

to train our desire to want more than either contemporary or traditional music divisions suggest is sufficient Because I think a lot of what we should be doing in worship is inviting and encouraging and forming people's desire to be active participants in a plurality of goods across infinite forms

jks (she/they) @jkshields.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
Coming back around to the top,... I think most people are more omnivorous in their musical intake than debates about traditional v contemporary suggest and that most churches would do well to cultivate a passionate diversity AND

I think many progressive churches under-support their music staff which makes getting someone who can put enough education and intention to work in this is asking for sacrifice.
110
jks (she/they) @jkshields.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
I think I regret not that so many people who lead progressive churches are committed to traditional music, but that they are elitist in their appreciation and attempts to form appreciation/participation in the congregation. Virtuosity should be neither enemy nor our common end.

jks (she/they) @jkshields.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
(3) we should treat our musicians as worship leaders not merely technical facilitation and we should train them not as "additional pastors" but as music educators who think deeply about music as communally & morally formative as well as musically formative
110
jks (she/they) @jkshields.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
MMM. A bit of a tangent. But (1) style of music is not what makes music inclusive or not (2) contemporary music which doesn't build congregational musical involvement is pretty common

💯 no soft cops 💯 no saviors but at least in this ruralish-bit of Massachusetts I live in, the library is often the least-siloed community center and there is work to be done here beyond the reference interview especially for patrons who aren't doing a lot of self-advocacy for one reason or another

For many communities the conversation is about un or under-housed individuals in poverty.... or subtance use and misuse... But other communities may also benefit from social work foci such as aging or interpersonal violence.

BUT (1) mostly ignores trauma-informed and abolitionist movements within social work (see NAASW) & (2) never defines what social workers *do* that isn't soft policing which seems to imply that is all they do

Important critical lacuna in the dialogue about SWs in libraries NAMELY (1) we don't have evidence it decreases social exclusion or increases inclusion (2) its not a solution which arises from patron demand/interest (3) it introduces new privacy concerns and risks reinforcing marginalizing policies
182
jks (she/they) @jkshields.bsky.social · 14/09/2026
The article point to improving the training for front-life staff as essential... and its something that needs to happen even if you have a SW on staff because the SW is not there during all open hours. But I think there is something to be said for SW librarians as one who organizes such training.
