• Over 50% of Iowa counties lack local obstetric services, and roughly one-third are considered full maternity care deserts with no birthing hospital or obstetric provider. • At least 41 to 50 hospital labor and delivery units have closed across Iowa over the last 15 to 25 years.

That is, retaliation. No one has bothered talking about the retaliation aspect of doing anti-censorship, pro-library work in an era where the other side has untold money and time. Except me, that is.

Trying to balance the fact that there is a literacy crisis with the idea that libraries MUST help patrons use AI to stay relevant. It's like we have to do whatever everyone wants, or we aren't relevant. It feels like a threat. What about our foundation- you know, books and the literacy crisis?

Last week, I opened the UPRLC Annual Conference with a keynote on hope, agency, and moving forward with intention. The presentation "Write the Next Chapter: Moving Forward with Purpose" invited librarians and library workers to see themselves as the authors of their own professional stories rather than letting the inbox, the loudest request, or outside pressures write the page for them.

My Letter to the IA Dept of Ed on SF 496 Rulemaking

Dear Thomas Mayes, Iowa Department of Education.

I am writing as an Iowa resident about how SF 496 is applied to school libraries. A book is not a passage. It is everything around it, and one of my favorite books, Zora Neale Hurston's Their Eyes Were Watching God shows why.

The novel follows Janie Crawford through three marriages and a lifetime of searching for her own voice. It is best known for the image of Janie beneath a blossoming pear tree, which is a metaphor for a young woman's awakening, not a depiction of a sex act. Its darker material is there for a reason: Janie's grandmother is the product of rape by an enslaver, and that history drives her fear for Janie. Janie herself endures a controlling husband and, later, jealousy and violence. Readers learn how exploitation echoes across generations, and how control gets excused as love. Then they watch Janie name what was done to her and claim her own story.

Not in Iowa? This bill is one to keep an eye on because it pulls from several other book banning bills nationwide, and it is yet another example of upending the Miller Test in favor of the right's manufactured war on books and queer kids. buttondown.com/wellsourced/...

Iowa Lawmakers Hate Reading Books Almost As Much As They Hate Queer Kids
There's no requirement for a whole book to be read before it's banned in Iowa under SF 496. A new proposal to the bill could speed up bans even more.

Now, the state Department of Education wants to add a new provision to the law that could allow the law to go from self-policing to complaint-driven. Again: no need to read the entire book. If you're in Iowa, there is public comment for 3 more days. Take action: buttondown.com/wellsourced/...

With the court's ruling that Iowa's anti-queer book banning law SF 496 could go into effect this April, districts statewide are banning a wide array of titles. There's no need to read a full book–it just needs a concerning word or passage.

This point, from my recent interview with @perrybaconjr.bsky.social for TNR, is so crucial. Trans people are desperate for relief from the relentless Republican attacks impacting all of us. When Democrats move right, they signal relief may not be coming, and that engenders a lot of despair.
And so for Democrats to say, They have a point on some of this, it is engendering a lot of hopelessness and a lot of fear in the trans community, because we have been just trying to hold on, hoping that this time would end and we would be able to get back to where we were five years, six years ago. And what Democrats are signaling is, like, No, we’re going to keep things as they are, and maybe even make them worse.
