I’m starting to think my TV-to-academia career trajectory may not have been the wisest choice.

Absolutely loving the achingly hip new deli next to campus, which is doing a roaring trade for students who haven’t yet realised that none of us can afford a £6 iced vanilla cold foam matcha.

Anyone else notice that wasps are getting smarter? Thirty years ago you had to coax them into a glass or they'd be in your face for hours. These days they find their own way out after a few minutes.

I’m not sure where to start.
An illustrative figure in a book, captioned “Figure 1.1 How the computer sees us.” I’m not sure how to start describing the figure itself. Line drawing. It’s a … face? Head? With one massive eye. No nose or mouth. Large ears. From the top of the head, where we might expect hair, is a huge finger, arcing up and to the right. It’s bigger than the rest of the head, grotesque but I don’t think intentionally so. I have no idea what’s going on, and this is page 19 of 470 or so.

This should be the end of the Reform party. But it should also prompt a complete overhaul of the polling industry and the Electoral Commission. The priority has to be securing domestic politics from foreign influence. That that’s happening is no longer a hypothetical, it’s demonstrated.

The first question the professor posed to her new invention, the consequenceometer, was: "If I can learn the consequences of decisions before deciding, will I be more decisive?" "No," the device said, "you will probe the consequences in ever greater depth, indecisive." She never used it again.

"Hmm… I wonder what a node-based audio engine would feel like if it was driven by sensor outputs from a loose network of Micro:Bits?" [an hour passes, during which I bake a cake] "Thanks, Claude." (wasn't quite that simple, but… almost)
Screenshot of a prototype web application which takes inputs as data sources into a node-based graph, applying transformations, and feeding audio generators. It looks pretty stylish. Not evident from the image: it's also functional.

Been doing some image-to-text analysis recently, with proprietary datasets I’m not allowed to upload to a cloud service. So, running local models. In most cases I’m finding a 7b-parameter model is adequate. While I can run a 32b model on my hardware, the execution time difference isn’t worth it.

All these breathless newspaper articles about how ‘the Spitfire’ ‘could return to production,’ and (a) they all seem to have the same wording. So: regurgitated press release, huh? Also (b) not a single reporter thought to ask what engine they had in mind? That’s… that’s just a little important, no?

Fun fact: I used to be able to judge the refresh rate of CRTs by humming while looking at them, and judging the beat frequency between the refresh ripple and my vibrating eyeball. Got quite good at it; was an occasionally useful skill in TV studios. And yes, 75Hz+ FTW.
