If you’re under the age of about 35, weren’t yet of age for the 2000 election, and are constantly asking how we went from the happy go lucky Obama years to where we are today, this is a very succinct answer.

It’s pretty natural to try to intellectualize it away, good lord I’ve tried. If we want to be better, more compassionate men who are the examples we set for our children, we gotta get out of our internally consistent minds and into the world as it is.

Jim Ray @jimray.net · 01/10/2026
None of this is easy to parse, especially since it doesn’t map to our lived experience. We literally don’t have the context, we don’t feel the world in our bodies the same way.

Misandry, like reverse discrimination, is a classic example of discrimination without power. It can feel the same as misogyny at an individual level but zooming out to recognize how we truly are treated differently than women, misandry just isn’t comparable.

Jim Ray @jimray.net · 01/10/2026
Racism and sexism are classic examples of discrimination *paired with power*. They require a social context. Understanding that means we have to deal with some uncomfortable truths about society and our place in it, but the alternative is just lying to ourselves. We owe each other more than that.

Jim Ray @jimray.net · 01/10/2026
We can all be discriminated against, just like we all have biases. Recognizing our individual biases and working to countermand them is part of the project of being a better person.

Jim Ray @jimray.net · 01/10/2026
Understanding the intersection of discrimination and power reveals a lot about the world. Discrimination happens at an individual level and, alas, is pretty endemic to human nature.

Another platform where Black folks and the sauce they bring are exploited, until they yet again become digital refugees fleeing from harassment and violence because of the lack of access to safety tools that prioritize them. Black folks deserve a culture of digital safety. It’s time for change.

These are not products of an effective design process. Instead of starting with a purpose and finding the best way to satisfy it they are starting with a behemoth existing material and desperately trying to find ways to make it useful. This is anti-design.

A thing I learned about Meta when I was trying to understand how their statements relate to their actions a few years ago is that *they just tell absolutely indefensible lies* and journalists almost always let them. They believed no one would ever punish them for it in any way that matters.

They're literally doing this
A classic New Yorker cartoon. In the middle is a campfire, in the background the wasteland of what appears to have been a thriving city.

To the left of the fire is a man, wearing a suit. The suit is ripped and shredded in places, as the apocalypse has not been kind; he remains committed to wearing the tie. Opposite the man are three small children, equally bedraggled, expressionless, cold and probably starving.

The man is telling a story and has an almost wistful look, recalling a halcyon time. It's clear the man was someone important, or at least rich, which to his mind is the same thing. The quote below the scene reads:

"Yes, the planet got destroyed, but for a beautiful moment in time we created a lot of value for shareholders."
