I was reading someone who put into words a way to discern ai writing (and which also makes AI writing annoying): that it tries to end every paragraph with a mic drop. I had mentally categorized this as "writes like a teenager trying to show off" but this is much more specific.

In their 🆕📄, @alisabokulich.bsky.social & @mattbrewer.bsky.social argue that targeted observation practices in the #geosciences owe much to Peirce’s views on the economy of research, which are better understood as an account of the pursuitworthiness of #data 👇 link.springer.com/article/10.1... #HPS
First page of the EJPS article titled "Pursuitworthy data collection in the geosciences: from Peirce’s economy of research to targeted observation" by Alisa Bokulich & Matthew Brewer.

Abstract
In the geosciences, field measurements are key sources of data, alongside more traditional laboratory experiments. Regardless of the data’s source, pursuitworthiness is arguably not just a question of the intrinsic merit of the knowledge produced, but also the value of that knowledge in light of limited resources (e.g., time, money, and labor). There is a long tradition of research on this issue in the geosciences, going back to the work of the pragmatist philosopher Charles Sanders Peirce. Motivated by his work as a government-funded geoscientist, Peirce developed a highly original theory of the “economy of research.” In this paper, we argue that Peirce’s views have been largely misunderstood, and offer an alternative interpretation of Peirce’s economy of research as an account of the pursuitworthiness of data. We argue that Peirce’s account is a forerunner of a current sophisticated data collection program in the geosciences, called targeted observation (or adaptive sampling), which is used to evaluate the pursuitworthiness of various possible measurements, experiments, or observations. We conclude by applying Peirce’s philosophical insights to assess the promise and limitations of targeted-observation programs in the geosciences today.

Look past the trees. What lies beneath our feet here is a global climate superpower. These waterlogged peatlands (bogs, fens) occupy a mere 3% of global land area, yet they pack away more carbon than all of the world's forest biomass combined. They are one of Earth's ultimate cooling mechanisms. 2/

A guy named Tim_after_Tim on Threads saw an encounter that made him understand why women would rather meet a bear in the forest than a man. So, he decided to do something. He made this poster, and a website where anyone can learn or download it — beabear.org:
BE A BEAR
Women say they'd rather encounter a bear than an unknown man alone in the woods.
Don't take it personally. Take it seriously.
HELP WOMEN FEEL SAFER ON THE TRAIL. FOLLOW THE BEAR CODE:
1
MAKE YOUR PRESENCE
KNOWN EARLY
When approaching from behind, call out calmly from a distance:
"Hi, passing on your left."
Don't suddenly appear beside her.
2
PASS PREDICTABLY
When letting someone pass, step into an open, visible spot. When passing, do it promptly rather than lingering beside her.
3
GIVE SPACE
Don't tailgate or match her pace from behind. Pass efficiently or drop well back. If she seems uneasy, create more distance.
4
KEEP IT FRIENDLY, NOT FLIRTY
A brief hello or nod is fine. Keep it neutral, take your cue from her response, and move on without taking offense if she doesn't engage.
5
AVOID PERSONAL
QUESTIONS
Don't ask whether she's alone, where she lives or is staying, or her exact route or schedule-even as casual conversation.
6
ASSUME COMPETENCE
Skip comments about her gear, pace, body, or preparedness, and don't offer advice unless asked. Speak up only for an immediate, specific hazard.
7
BE AN ALLY
If someone is making a woman feel unsafe, step in to help. Create distance, offer to stay with her or help her reach other people, and call for help if needed. Follow her lead and don't escalate.
