A woman on a Citibike squeezed to the left of me and glanced off my bike on Brunswick today. The audacity to ride full speed and go to my left and expect me to just jump into traffic - obviously something they don't want to do themselves - is really something.

I am pro-safe but unsanctioned mobility behaviors. Firetrucks blocking the bike lane so you're biking on the sidewalk? No problem. Idaho stop? Great. Biking wrong-way and pushing right-way cyclists into the car lane? Insanely anti-social and wrong.

Interesting. Didn't realize it was tried. Maybe 20 years has changed things, or do you think hybrid buses are still a dead end? The MTA seems to make use of a lot of them.

Do you know why NJ Transit doesn't seem to have ever operated hybrid buses? That would at least reduce pollution and maybe maintenance too without breaking the bank.

First proposed in September 2000. I remember back then way before the whole urbanist reawakening they wanted to create a walkable downtown for Middletown. Instead the NIMBYs fought for an ugly clown that scares little kids on an empty lot for 25 years. We live in a sick, sick world.

The amazing policy would be to require cash outs for any employees that don't use parking. Use it for transit, use it for mortgage/rent, whatever, but everyone chooses how they want to use it.

I get to post about it 1st: NJ finally voted to raise premiums for its State Health Benefits Plan. Expect another round in the death spiral. Gov Sherrill's campaign rec'd reference-based pricing (RBP): cap hospital prices at a % of what Medicare pays. Strangely, the legislature is not acting.

Jersey City is a bigger place than most, but seems very hard for a muni library system to beat a county one. Monmouth, Somerset, and Mercer Counties all open their libraries on Sundays.

jimmybot @jimmybot.com · 27/09/2026
Rainy Sunday, would be a great day to head to the library. Oh wait, unlike most major cities, Jersey City closes all libraries on Sundays 😅 But HCCC library is open! If you are looking for a place to read and browse (but not borrow), any Hudson County resident with a muni library card can access.

Ah yeah, I probably would. It looks like it has buses even out there and combined ridership is around 2M-4M a year. That's enough that there should be some level of BRT. There is no civilization in NJ without NJT.

Is this area of NJ on either side of 280 but in between train lines known to feel especially soul-less and car-centric? Just endless 4-lane high-speed roadways and strip malls and low-density with no variation in form. Feels like it makes a lot of sense Livingston Mall died.

Holymoly. Imho general calming deserves a lot of credit here in addition to Citibikes and PBL network. With e-bikes and getting people to mostly drive 25 mph, it isn't that bad riding residential streets with traffic. Long way to go to make it accessible to all ages and abilities, but good progress.

I don't know, where's the Hudson Bus Redesign?! And even if it's out, what's the plan to get incremental route improvements done?

jimmybot @jimmybot.com · 23/09/2026
It's definitely not door-step convenient, but I can see it being a reasonable change to balance Marin / Washington bus frequency overall and serve both corridors. Getting to the ShopRite would be door-step and returning would be a short walk away. Whereas Whole Foods neither is good right now.

jimmybot @jimmybot.com · 23/09/2026
If it followed the pattern of the 9, the return stop would be Washington Blvd and 4th St, which seems pretty reasonable to walk over to.

Wait till everyone learns 95 Columbus is a data center that creates no noise, is plugged into the grid, and generates good municipal tax dollars without asking for anything in return. Trading computers have a big advantage when hosted in Jersey City.

One of the most important things in Hudson County in many years. JFK is Hudson County's Boulevard of Death. BRT would make JFK safer by: 1. Redesigning JFK to be safer for all road users 2. Shifting traffic to transit. Buses are *60X* safer per passenger mile than private cars. Be there!

Per student spending at the Brooklyn school in question is over $50K a year. JCPS is close to $40K a year. JCBOE pays teachers an average of $500K more over a career than comparable school districts. Median pay is above $100K, for a job that has summers off, winter and spring break, and a pension.

1. It's really important the NHJ wrote this whether you agree with her other ideas or not 2. Lack of public school teacher accountability is completely core to the issue here, and it goes far beyond the worst schools. 3. Like JCPS, funding not the issue Gift link: www.nytimes.com/2026/09/20/m...

2nd St between the HBLR tracks and Washington is comically wide. Could easily add a two-way protected bike lane plus the little greenway in-between would connect to 1st St.

jimmybot @jimmybot.com · 18/09/2026
I was thinking more just to make it easy to bike to the ped plaza / Hamilton Park area on calmer streets, but there aren't great options for full eastbound protected bike lane biking right now. Even piecemeal could help. 1st between Grove & Marin could easily become protected + through ShopRite /

Every day. @eleanalittle.bsky.social Would be great to reduce the danger by converting one lane to a short two-way bike lane. Would make it easy to bike east down 1st St, which is pretty calm. Crossing Columbus is not fun, and if your destination is the ped plaza / north, it's pretty out of the way

That last one, not just massive teen depression, but carnage from distracted driving alone? Distracted driving is in a class of mass negative societal phenomenon like gun violence. A woman almost drove her car into my bike today because she was scrolling some BS while driving. Society mostly ignores

Meta's data centers are not small. All of the cloud provider's data centers were enormous even prior to the recent boom. And yeah, I would say most of the public has been asleep at the wheel at the harms of Facebook / Instagram / TikTok / Youtube / Apple & Google (smartphones).

Despite traffic engineer reluctance, all-way stops are one of the safest intersection designs, safer than traffic lights, and Jersey City has slowly added them. The problem with intersections with traffic lights is the speeds are higher, and there is turn on *green*, without needing to stop first.

jimmybot @jimmybot.com · 15/09/2026
Even in Jersey City, traffic engineering will drag their feet for years about a simple problem like a dangerous intersection missing stop signs. It truly is a lot easier when the local councilperson is in your corner fighting for safer streets. Thank you Councilwoman @eleanalittle.bsky.social

Good idea. A lot of NJ is either train or bus served and not by both. Changing the name would make it more clear and easier to navigate. The app is also overly train-centric in design.

CDBG funds can be used for a lot of beneficial purposes. Blowing a MILLION dollars on a community garden for the benefit of an exclusive set of residents linked with a three-year-old "community board" does not seem like a good use of money when our streets and public parks are in a poor state.

There are other parks that could sorely use the money if the money must be spent. Mary Benson Park next to PS 5 was supposed to be renovated but some NIMBYs somehow thought 5 stories instead of 4 stories next to the Turnpike was too high.

@eleanalittle.bsky.social Unbelievable that we are considering wasting a million dollars during a housing shortage and after a giant 15% property tax increase. Two people were just killed on Jersey City streets. Where are the flex posts? Where is the left turn calming? Why is 20 mph still delayed?

Jersey City paid for a private easement to become a permanent part of the Brunswick Community Garden. This "community" garden no longer had public hours since the pandemic and were in no hurry to ever restore it. Maddening. Public spending on parks good, on private gardens bad.

JC raised taxes 15% and cut park maintenance. Thursday the council votes to spend $1.2M on a vacant lot — to lease it for $1/yr as a garden open ~610 hrs a year. A developer already has approval for 3- and 4-BR family apartments there. Vote it down. betterblocksnj.org/2026/09/07/a...

QueensLink looks like a great needed project and is maybe a top 10 ridership transit project in the country. I'm sure Mamdani's lack of courage here is in part because he is afraid it will cost way too much to build and take way too long. Can we say Democrats wouldn't try to everything bagel it?

👎 Two dastardly trends I see in this terrible outcome: 1. Special-interests taking over every aspect of government and inflating costs makes good things look out-of-reach 2. Rails-to-trails is a dangerous coalition. You attract the NIMBYs at the cost of them forever opposing transit

It'd change the rhetoric in Jersey City if the thinly veiled discrimination against newcomer Chinese and Indian immigrants had to face green card voters that would be pissed off. It'd also be healthier if non-citizen residents felt more invested in their local happenings and decision-making.

I'm not even talking about the meat of the issue here which is that traffic engineers will fight you on every basic safety measure for years, and then one day, there's a change, it's fine and works well, and there's no reflection about why an entire profession is an obstinate anti-safety cult.

We allow public departments to completely whiff on doing basic tasks competently. How could anyone feel good about paying more in property taxes to fund staff that do stuff like this over and over again?

jimmybot @jimmybot.com · 28/08/2026
Traffic engineering orthodoxy has been finally defeated, and the intersection is being converted to a much safer all-way intersection. So we need new stop signs. But instead of installing them properly, they are reusing the perpendicular useless sign pole and the stop sign is too far in and hidden 😭
