Three mature milkweed seed pods are sun drying their husks, waiting for fall and winter winds and storms to open them, and spread their fluffy seeds all around Saranac Lake. The photo was taken while we were walking on the rails-to-trails park. There were many native plants growing beside it These were growing on the causeway across the lake.

Ivan Turgenev's "Execution of Troppmann" is a short essay, published in 1870, that gives a first-hand account of the writer attending a public execution in Paris. Turgenev's details how the drunk, unruly crowd turned a somber moment into a carnival. A deeply moving essay; I encourage you to read it.

Aren't you happy don't have a diesel? We saw it over $7 / gal. on our trip. I was pleased with getting 35.2 mpg in our new hybrid Forester. It was nice to stop a lot more often for bladder breaks than fuel.

A hiking trail hemmed on one side by a cliff and the other large boulders goes on and through a jumble of good-sized rocks.

The trail goes through a passage made by a cliff on one side and a huge boulder (probably a massive chunk that split off from the cliff) and comes out through a triange-shaped opening. There are carved stone steps leading down.

This photo of a hiking trail in early autum has a log with a "W" carved into it with a chainsaw. It took The Hoosier Hikers Council 3 years to build this trail. Many deadfalls had to be cleared from the route and almost all of them were cleared by Phil W. Phil volunteered with the HHC for over 20 years and would usually leave his mark on one tree on a trail. There are trails all over the state with Phil's "W". Phil died a couple of weeks ago. So if you see a "W" on a tree that has been cleared off of a trail in Indiana, think kindly of Phil and enjoy his work.

All the falls in the park were the late summer doldrums with low flow but Cedar Falls is actually more interesting with less flow because of the way it flows around the protruding rock in in its center. This is a wide shot show the falls in situ showing the sandstone layers, ledges, alcoves, and even a small cave.

Ready to start posting photos from our recent Park-Hopper trip. First hop was Hocking Hills State Park in Ohio which provided lots of photo ops. Today it's the very pretty approach to Cedar Falls. #photography #hiking #creeks #cliffs #Ohio

Queer Creek at this time was placid, nicely reflecting the tree and moss-covered rocks which line its banks.

The same creek still lined with trees but now with one of the Black Hand Sandstone formation cliffs in the background.
