Yooooo remember a couple years ago when those three LA city council members were caught on tape saying a ton of insanely racist stuff and conspiring to gerrymander another council member’s district? That other council member was Nithya Raman. The voting bloc they were trying to split? Renters.
Nury Martinez [00:54:56] Nobody wants a little Armenian love? I mean, they have done anything to us. He's not a problem. Stabilize the valley. Nithya Is not going to get the perfect district. We're not going to give her a renters district. That's what she wants. I told her, that's not happening. You're going to get the district that you're going to get. You're going to have to run, and probably in a district that more than half of them don't know who you are. Go fucking do the work and see if you can get re-elected. But our commitment is not to re-elect her. That's not my commitment, right?
Herrera [00:55:24] No. She wants to rile up the renters to create a base and not do anything for the renters. But she's just got to keep that agitation going.
Nury Martinez [00:55:34] She's not going to get the renters. We're not, we can't give her that.
Kevin De Leon [00:55:37] Because the thing is, is like, for example, CD 1 or CD 14, of course, in the immediate for Gil's reelection. But then Gil has one term. It's not us. It's for Latino strength for the foreseeable future whereas for her, it's not about- it's about just her as an individual.
Gil Cedillo [00:55:55] Right.
Herrera [00:55:56] For for last years,.
Gil Cedillo [00:55:57] She hasn't even, hasn't even endorsed me.
Nury Martinez [00:56:00] Well, we're going to.
Gil Cedillo [00:56:02] She hasn't even endorsed me. [00:56:03]l'm gonna break her. [0.0s]

loath to be too precious about this stuff but I want one lesson of defector to be "you can choose to not do stuff that sucks" even if "doing stuff that sucks" is the default
screenshot of a subscription appeal email from defector:

Too often these days I find myself “choosing” between Bad and Worse. This week’s indignity: Should I want Larry Ellison’s poreless son or a gluttonous, $400 billion company to secure the right to enrich the vile David Zaslav?

For all the complaints about how “we don’t make things in America anymore,” the country produces plenty of opportunities to debase yourself by rooting for the merely Bad. Immiserated by a steady stream of these false choices, it’s easy to forget that Something Else is possible.

Defector is Something Else. From our blogs and podcasts to the company’s cooperative structure, everything we do reflects the sensibilities shared by our staff and subscribers. We have no access to preserve, no investors to please, and no gambling partner to feed. This lets us see things clearly, say things straightforwardly, and offer refuge from this inhumane moment.

We chose Something Else. You can, too:
