It would be great if at least some of them stayed though, because I want a new job and in this market the less competition the better 🤣

Fantastic opportunity - I was so impressed with how warm and friendly the department at Leiden was as a PostDoc, and the city/quality of life is exceptional. Highly recommend!

A senior academic recently told me “I’m not sure what you contribute here”. In my latest “Moral Garden” Substack I think about metrics, institutional precarity, and whether the things we focus on in academia matter at all. Also, of course, gardening. themoralgarden.substack.com/p/what-do-yo...

New research from MIT found that those who used ChatGPT can’t remember any of the content of their essays. Key takeaway: the product doesn’t suffer, but the process does. And when it comes to essays, the process *is* how they learn. arxiv.org/pdf/2506.088...

There are 2 previous historical cases of countries destroying their science and universities, crippling them for decades: Lysenkoism in the USSR and Nazi Germany. The Trump administration will be the 3rd. It's not just budgets but research, institutions, expertise, and training the next generation.
Graphs showing 25 years of budgets for the National Institute of Health, NASA, and the NSF. In all cases, the proposed budget for next year is far, far below any year of the previous quarter century.

I'm trying to think about these photos of my roses as a reminder for persistence in my research. Even when things look like they are dormant and not fitting, there’s a season coming when it will all come together.

I think this is in some ways a nice metaphor for research in academia. Sometimes it can feel like there is no progress with paper rejections, dead-ends, problems in research infrastructure. But even when it feels like nothing is happening, things are happening in the background.

One day seemingly all at once, buds appear. The roses burst open all in one go and the garden is alive with different fragrances.

All winter, the garden looks bare. The branches seem brittle, the ground lifeless. It gets to February and it seems like a lot of work to sort everything out, with little apparent benefit. You do it, and the garden still looks lifeless and dull. But beneath the surface, progress is happening.

Why did we become convinced that the answer was always “disruption”, when experience tells us that the achievement of civilisation is the opposite? The move from chaos to organisation. The move from vulnerability to stability. Move carefully and fix things.

As well as advancing our understanding of how we use signals of effort to form impressions of character in a world filled with generative AI, we end by raising the key question: In a world chasing optimization, is something lost when we outsource the doing itself?

Jim AC Everett @jimaceverett.bsky.social · 01/05/2025
This work offers a psychological counterpoint to the narrative that AI always enhances efficiency - and that we should always enhance efficiency. Sometimes, doing things the hard way matters – especially when it comes to signalling value, authenticity, and character.
100
Jim AC Everett @jimaceverett.bsky.social · 01/05/2025
Why? It’s not just about effort. Our findings suggest people infer less authenticity and less care when someone outsources a personal task to AI. As one participant put it: “If he really cared, he would have just done it by himself from scratch.”
100
Jim AC Everett @jimaceverett.bsky.social · 01/05/2025
Critically, even when people use AI transparently, collaboratively, and for "good reason", negative judgments persist. We show that outsourcing not only leads us to think more negatively about the person outsourcing and their motivations, but also the outsourced work itself.

Jim AC Everett @jimaceverett.bsky.social · 01/05/2025
Across five pre-registered studies we show people form negative impressions of those who use AI, especially when they use it to complete socio-relational tasks – things like writing love letters or wedding vows.

Challenging AI-hype with @jimaceverett.bsky.social and charting a more responsible and virtuous course #aiethics
The ethical problem with focusing on AI as a tool of “empathizing” is in how it cheapens empathy. Empathy is no longer a fundamentally human virtue and way of connecting with others. Empathy is reduced to nothing more than a means to an end. Empathy is a design problem to solve. Many people are lonely, so AI can keep them company. Doctors are not always the best at bedside manner, so AI can replace them to better comfort humans. Training HR caseworkers is expensive and time-consuming, so AI can take over some of the workload. Empathy is a way of mollifying customers, creating the perception of friendship, or removing the need for genuine human-to-human connections in trying times. Empathy is a commodity to be purchased from tech companies, one API credit at a time.

We end by placing these discussions in a broader context, suggesting there are no easy answers but we need to fundamentally grapple with this broader political and social context. Critically: what future for humans do we want?
110
Jim AC Everett @jimaceverett.bsky.social · 24/04/2025
Still, though, there are problems - it risks alienating humans, it risks a shallow focus on words, and we know there are problems with cultural bias in AI models.
