Something else I noticed in this blog post, OpenAI says it was using a model /intentionally/ without safeguards, and gave it access the internet for a task. And it was doing this without closely monitoring it given that it took 3 months to flag up the breach.

The AI debate has forced me, somewhat agst my will, to grapple a bit more closely with the "longtermists", basically a movement or subculture of morons who propose novel forms of moral reasoning based on sci-fi ideas they imagine might happen hundreds, thousands or millions of years in the future.

The overview says: SOC 3900 Sociology of AI uses a sociological lens to study what is popularly called "artificial intelligence." In this class students will learn about cutting edge research examining the origins, impacts, and struggles over the broad set of technologies and practices involving AI. Through an international focus, this class will cover numerous topics related to AI, including: gig work, algorithmic bias, data colonialism, resource extraction, digital labor, data center studies, and environmental and climate effects. This class will primarily focus on sociological research, but will also include scholarship from geography, history, international studies, and environmental studies, as well as other social scientific and humanistic disciplines. t took me a while to realise what the man sitting next to me on the train was doing. He was flicking through pictures of a little girl on his phone; zooming in on some, cropping the images. Hardly unusual, of course, except that on closer inspection the pictures were very clearly of the toddler sitting opposite us, playing with her parents. On a crowded train of people mostly staring obliviously at our own phones, a stranger had been covertly photographing that little girl over and over again. And if it hadn’t been for that very visible phone screen giving him away, he wouldn’t have been caught.
