This morning, during some chaos, this zipped by on one of my feeds. Maybe it was here? Hard to overstate how much this made my day. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beaver-...
"Beaver-engineered dam in the Czech Republic
Article Talk
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In early 2025, beaver activity in the Brdy Protected Landscape Area, Czech Republic, contributed to the restoration of a wetland ecosystem. A family of beavers constructed a series of dams that coincidentally accomplished environmental goals of the Czech government, which had delayed its proposed project since 2018 for bureaucratic and financial reasons. The beaver-built dams saved the Czech government approximately US$1.2 million, providing ecological benefits including improved water quality, enhanced biodiversity, and better water retention."

Zoning in theory: we need land use regulation to keep homes away from sources of pollution. Zoning in practice: the only places you can build new housing are right next to the highways and high-traffic streets that are your city’s largest sources of pollution.

floor area ratio (FAR) limits are designed to stop housing. in 1961 new york city capped FAR at 12 to prevent affordable housing which they dubbed “vertical slums”. the empire state building’s FAR is 25. why do we keep using FAR?

If you care about #fisheries, small scale fishers, food sovereignty and environmental justice, check this out. The inshore zone, long reserved for artisanal fisherfolk and local markets, now potentially open to commercial fleets with more indiscriminate and destructive gear. 🦑🌏🌊🎣

Grapefruit and Barbancourt rum makes a great cocktail during our citrus season. It's even better with a little crushed ginger and lime.

The Park Circle neighborhood has been built out for years except for a few lots that flood. Now we are building on them. 2 homes on the left have been built in the last 5 years and flooded during the last hurricane. What is going on with incentives that cause this? Is it just increased demand?

STREET TREES ARE USEFUL Street trees reduce flash-flooding Simply, they SLOW THE RATE rainwater builds up in our streets Holding water in their canopies Roots enable the ground to absorb more water Plus they cool our cities, thus lowering air moisture. Pretty cool source: TreesforStreets

hadn't come across this theory about why so many myths about the pleiades mention there being seven sisters when only six are visible: because the root story may be 100,000 years old theconversation.com/the-worlds-o...

The world’s oldest story? Astronomers say global myths about ‘seven sisters’ stars may reach back 100,000 years
Cultures around the world call the Pleiades constellation ‘seven sisters’, even though we can only see six stars today. But things looked quite different 100,000 years ago

We've had some breaks in the rain today which is helping a lot. this picture shows Turtle bridge is totally covered in water about an hour after high tide. It seems like somehow we are flooding in different places than normal for this storm.
