#WIPSnips 'guard' I went with 'guarded,' but since Sunny's having this troubling contretemps with one of the corrupt *guards* in his new home, I think it works!

He took note of the people standing to attention on either side of the gate but didn’t think much of them. This was a thing that he understood people in cities did. Civilizations that thought themselves impressive and competed with each other were known to arm soldiers, even go to war with one another. He wasn’t startled when one of them stepped into his path as he made to pass through the open gates because he didn’t understand what was happening; muttering an apology, he took a step to the side. It confused him when the person he had run up against sidestepped as well, so that they were still in one another’s way.
“Oy!”
He looked down into the human’s face. It was red, and he felt a flutter of misgiving when he saw the scowl they directed at him. “Yes?”
“You need to back off! You’re not allowed.”
“To?” he asked, confused.
The man’s eyes blazed, as if the answer had been obvious. “Enter the city!”
“Oh.” He gazed blankly through the gates at the traffic passing by within. It looked indistinguishable from what was going on out here, and he didn’t understand the purpose of this stricture. “Um. Okay. Excuse me, I didn’t know.”
The fellow gave him a guarded nod. “New here, are you?”
“Just got off the cart.”
“Well, see that you keep yourself in line. Bad enough we have to play host to every fool who thinks to make it rich, we can’t be looking after you at all hours in addition.”

#FridayFling From the new novel I've been failing to draft *the last chapter of* for the last month

Down the stairs in a clatter and out onto the street, where he went still with one hand on the knob, the other on the jamb. Peering around him with eyes squinted in the dazzling sunlight while he asked himself where he was going. He was still dizzy with desire, lips tingling, stomach turning flips; the sickly sense of disappointment was only starting to set in. The fear that he had broken them. How was a question he wasn’t trying to answer.
Letting out an angry breath, he shut the door into the stairwell and went back upstairs. There, he splashed cool water on his face while he waited for his heart to slow down slightly. He gazed into his own eyes, taking in his stricken expression and bloodshot eyes, and discovered it was harder today to put the emotion away. Muttering ‘fuck it,’ he left the bathroom without further efforts to pull himself together.
He stretched his legs, fists clenching. He hadn’t bothered to tuck his trousers into the boots, so they flopped around him in a sloppy way that fueled his aggravation. The longer he walked, the angrier he grew, as it struck him how unfair this was. Yes, he had been upset by the intimate moment and been a little weird because of it. Was he not allowed? People were weird sometimes, it was how people worked! He had a backstory, didn’t everyone? There was nothing off about that. It didn’t mean he deserved to be run out on. Insult to injury that he had to chase the man down so he could admit he had been really turned on by kissing him and that he had been a fool to try to act as though he didn’t want something to happen between them.
