There is also a marked increase in dense, AI-written papers. AI tools are making it easy for authors to flood arXiv [and others with] low-value papers.
A histogram showing the incredible increase in submissions.

> In September of 2016, arXiv received 9,869 submissions. In September of 2024, arXiv received 20,569 submissions. This September, arXiv received 40,363 submissions, which in turn generated almost 9,000 support tickets for arXiv staff and moderators. In only the past two years, submissions have doubled.

The death penalty is a moral abomination. State-sanctioned barbarism pushed by incompetent morons and sanctioned by the Supreme Court. Absolute ghoul shit. www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news...
The lone woman on Tennessee's death row was still alive after she was administered two lethal injections, her lawyer said in a motion seeking to halt her execution Wednesday night, a stunning development after the Supreme Court had stepped in to allow the state to put her to death.
At 8:26 p.m. local time, witnesses said
"executioners had injected both syringes of lethal injection chemicals and Pike is still alive and snoring," her lawyers said in a federal court filing.
They said Pike "has not lost consciousness and still has a heartbeat," and that curtains to the death chamber "have gone down twice."

I think an acknowledgment is necessary because the available evidence undermines trust. Was Thorp's use strictly "literature search" and did he read the cited sources? If a source was added as a result of "editing [..] to improve clarity of language" then I'd say it clearly lands in "drafting".

Operational biological sex definitions applied to hummingbirds (Bleiweiss 1992; Bleiweiss 1999; Bleiweiss 2001; Diamant et al. 2021; Falk et al. 2022; Falk et al. 2021) where sex is operationally defined by binary plumage phenotypes in the field. Each row depicts a wild individual hummingbird with morphological traits (beak length, plumage coloration), behavioural traits (territoriality) and their unobserved gamete type. This example illustrates how the same individual can be operationally defined as one sex in the field (based on external phenotypes) but classified as a different sex based on their gametes (which cannot be easily observed in the field), highlighting how definitional choices shape scientific reporting of sex.

The "chain of custody of why" is a load-bearing element of science. In numerical solutions of PDE (as in fluid and structural mechanics), the modern practice of verification (solving the equations right) and validation (solving the right equations) as distinct emerged from painful epistemic flailing
The old way will be wrong sometimes. But you will know why you are wrong when the data start coming back, and you will be able to adjust because you have your chain of custody of why. With an LLM, there is only the one step. If you can’t examine the “why?” at every step of the chain, you can’t determine if your hypothesis is realistic and worth spending large amounts of money to check out, and you can’t tell if you would be better served by hosting a giant bonfire party using your investors’ cash as fuel. And that situation makes me nervous. Nervous enough not to use an LLM.

I wish to appeal to the governments and peoples of the world to renew and strengthen their commitment, to increase the resources dedicated to combating hunger and its root causes, and to remove the obstacles that prevent aid from reaching those in need. At the same time, such support should also strengthen engagement with the Church and civil society.
Reinforcing the capacities of all these actors together will multiply our collective effectiveness in the fight against hunger.
