it's very funny to me how a decade ago, tv execs were telling me "streaming is the future!" but then their actions over the last decade show that, no, actually we're just going to reinvent and repackage cable. Old wine, new bottle.

Particularly when we are talking about WBD, which took on ~$60b in debt to buy AT&T, and then struggled mightily to cut the business enough to make that work. Now Paramount is taking on ~$80b in debt. Between that and Oracle's AI exposure, the Ellisons are really taking some risks.

But all of this is bad. A media landscape defined by consolidation doesn't have as much reason to compete and even with upstarts like TikTok or YouTube out there, owning a lot of the valuable IP in this space is a huge advantage.

Not sure it's a great idea for tech companies such as Google or Apple to acquire their way into being media companies. AOL Time Warner levels of disaster potential because it's not a core competency. But companies like Apple sit on mountains of cash and there's only so much hardware they can sell.

Thing is, the conglomerates are running out of merger targets. I do add on the next slide technology companies with media side hustles (e.g. Apple) and doctcoms such as Netflix. The question is who eats whom? Netflix tried to buy WBD in late '25, a breathtaking thought 15 years ago.

Now-obsolete slide. I showed in my intro course a mere five weeks ago. WBD and Paramount collapse into a single entity, the Big Four becomes the Big Three media companies that bring in more than 90% of revenue depending on how you measure (we studied the Big Ten when I was in college in the '90s).

The people writing stuff like this were not the young people getting on and messing around on college campuses. I saw its value the day I logged on (accessed the card catalog at U Minnesota from California, again because I could). Like a sudden vision of what was now possible.

God it was so beautiful and social and creative in a way Facebook never was. I taught myself HTML just so I could make a home page for my dorm’s Super Tecmo Bowl league. Why? Because I could. Some dudes with a league page in Pittsburgh found it and we became internet friends.

THIS. "Real" AI is doing some amazing things in specialist spaces. LLMs -- i.e. what the general public thinks of as "AI" -- are not. There is a huge difference!

Good from @mattdpearce.com. My read on this bill is it's calibrated to address the tension between public investment and the downsides of government subsidy (i.e. strings). Detractors will ask why invest in a failing business, but news is a public good and a vacuum left by dying news orgs is worse.

And no acknowledgement that there is plenty of room for intense political disagreement and polarization if everyone agrees to the norms and laws of the democratic order. So the begging for dialogue is begging on behalf of people who don’t think, e.g., the reconstruction amendments should be honored

One thing I admire about my friends on the left is a desire to compromise and talk through disagreement. But it does leave this side open to bad-faith manipulation from actors who try to use self-interested calls to dialogue as a way to sand off their own rough edges. It takes two to dialogue.

The A1 example of this is to contrast ‘16 and ‘20. Lots of liberal handwringing and calls to understand the other side after Trump I ( speaks to a value many on the left have) but after Biden won in ‘20 the other side tried to overthrow the government and the left was asked to understand that too. 😂

We are at part of the cycle where Republicans are about to lose badly, and so they pivot to talking about the rhetoric temperature as if there is no pathology to it. Every dang time, hacking a real desire for dialogue but asking nothing meaningful of the most vicious voices in the right.

Think of it this way: every time AI subs for a teaching or advising process is a time a student is being deprived of human connection and interaction. And my friends, the social navigation of college is pretty damn important, and sometimes more important than course material.

The push the past 30 years to run universities like businesses is one of those under-the-radar trends that affects the experience. Despite the political banter, universities are inherently conservative. Boards of trustees full of Wall St. types who think running higher ed like a hedge fund is Good.

Pushing faculty to use AI for grading or chatbots for office hours isn’t innovation. It’s symptomatic of a corporatizing-higher-ed trend that has saddled instructors with more TPS reports every year while cutting resources that allow us to give students a better experience. Tech to solve self-owns.
