Really hate it when Spelling Bee rejects plays that make me feel smart.

Now-obsolete slide. I showed in my intro course a mere five weeks ago. WBD and Paramount collapse into a single entity, the Big Four becomes the Big Three media companies that bring in more than 90% of revenue depending on how you measure (we studied the Big Ten when I was in college in the '90s).

This Guy killed it as Claudio in his school performance of “Measure For Measure” tonight. He put in a lot of work and I’m so proud of him. It’s such a joy to see your kid do something they love.

Axl would disagree.
MONEYHONEY not a word in Spelling Bee despite the fact we have Welcome To The Jungle proving otherwise.

I discover maybe 2-3 new albums a year, and it's always because my kids are listening to it. Literally have never heard of "Choosin' Texas" but I've also not felt connected to the culture around new music in two decades and who cares if you are or aren't?

I've been collecting AI chat app video and still ads for my class next spring. Nothing often surprises me anymore about the Internet but I am still finding myself stunned at how blatant and cynical they are in targeting men with really fucked-up views of companionship and love.

... And so Ted (well, Funko Ted) sits on my office table at work to remind me that curiosity has always been a strength of mine and what drives me to be a better mentor, teacher, father, husband. It starts with asking rather than telling, something I'm going to do more of. ...

Started 14 weeks of training for the October half marathon today. At a bit of a deficit since I am just getting back from medical leave and also was dealing with some shin splint issues, but it’s good to have a goal. #runsky

Off medical leave this week with small steps back. Feeling stronger every day and have appreciated the kind notes. To celebrate, I volunteered at the Great South Side Sale that Lehigh does every year to raise money for local kids. Including THIS GUY who will be 15(!) soon & folds pants like a boss.

While on medical leave, I’ve passed the time on NYT Games and have gotten really good at crossword wordplay. This is kind of a crazy result for me for a Saturday puzzle (the hardest of the week).

One thing I found comfort it in is visualization, remembering all the wonderful times I spent in the California redwoods as a kid. Those beautiful, ancient trees that have evolved to survive fire. Picturing myself as a redwood - strong and resilient. Here's a photo I took on a trip in 2018.

Hi friends. Three weeks of partial-hospitalization alternatives therapy later, I am stable and moving to the next phase. Finding myself and my voice again. I kind of liked that guy and want him back. Thank you for the kind thoughts and messages. It has meant more than you could imagine.

Caliban's War (Expanse, #2)
by James S.A. Corey

“During his time as a graduate student, he had done data collection for a study of Pinus contorata. Of all the varieties of pine to rise off Earth, lodgepole pine had been the most robust in low-g environments. His job had been to collect the fallen cones and burn them for the seeds. In the wild, lodgepole pine wouldn't germinate without fire; the resin in the cones encouraged a hotter fire, even when it meant the death of the parental tree. To get better, it had to get worse. To survive, the plant had to embrace the unsurvivable.”

Having an all-timer of a shitty week so I’m wearing my favorite new shirt and remembering all the beautiful, stupid love put out into the world by @defector.com’s own Dan McQuade. Tell me something that’s making you smile today.

Related, in intro course next week we are diving into journalism and its role in society. This is a slide that I've cribbed from @jayrosen.bsky.social's great thread earlier this month (linked in the next post). They're reading the whole thread, but I found his distillation here really accessible.

Ah yes, I remember learning about journalism being better when it's backed by live markets when I saw "Spotlight."
Polymarket ad announcing partnership with Substack so people can link to prediction markets in their post. Punctuated with the outrageous line "Journalism is better when it's backed by live markets."

A traditional unlike any other: Topps All-Star Rookies that I’ve never heard of. When I was a kid these were crazy good trade bait for ripping of younger neighborhood kids. “OOOOH THERE IS A TROPHY HE IS VERY GOOD.” I should have been a hedge fund manager.

I got a lot of White Sox cards. I sense the work of the Pope. But Montgomery’s a nice pull. Good debut last season, probably(?) unsustainable peripheral numbers but who knows. Hope, spring, etc.
