Like, what is this animation choice? Who decided that this menu should violently shudder every time you open it?

The new Firefox UI might be problematic, but at least it also fails to address any of the previous UI's most glaring shortcomings. bsky.app/profile/did:... bsky.app/profile/jere...

btw i think the reason i like magical sigils and worlds based around them is because magical sigils are actually real. you open up a satellite LNB and what you find is shapes wrought from metal to manipulate unseen forces. you can't tell me they're not magical sigils
picture of the inside of a satellite low-noise block downconverter (LNB), the circuit in the focal point of a satellite TV dish. this one's a rectangular metal case with inside of it a printed circuit board full of gold-plated traces. many have strange shapes you wouldn't find in other electronics. scientifically you might call them microstrip filters, but really they're nothing more than a well-understood magical rune

Golden Gate is such a huge improvement over Tahoe, but what is the point of a toolbar background that only appears when a window is backgrounded?
A comparison of the Messages window in macOS Golden Gate when it’s foregrounded and backgrounded. When the window is foregrounded, there’s no toolbar background behind the compose, contact details, and FaceTime buttons. When the window is backgrounded, there is.

As someone who likes to tinker, I wouldn't let that deter you. But the Android experience does not feel like it's for everyone.

Can confirm, the hardware is delightful. Android, on the other hand, was quite a shock coming from a Linux-based Miyoo. Setup (following some YouTube instructions) took forever, and I don't really look forward to having to manage and adapt to all the software updates it will inevitably get.

Firefox, why are you like this.
Three website shortcuts on the Firefox “new tab” page. The label for the middle one, “HeyDesigner” drops just the “r” down to the second line rather than hyphenating or truncating.

In other words, a much higher quality portrait mode. At least, that's what I'm hoping for, and is the only thing I can think of that would justify introducing a mechanical component to a camera system that hasn't had any until now.

So my prediction is that a variable-aperture iPhone camera will compare images with the aperture open and closed, then use that to extrapolate how the out-of-focus regions would render if the aperture were *even more open* than the lens is physically capable of.

There's almost no reason, aside from shooting in very very bright conditions, why you would want to reduce the amount of light hitting a smartphone camera sensor. Unless… you're going to do fancy stuff with computers.
100
Jeremy Kanter @jeremykanter.com · 04/09/2026
For non-camera nerds: an aperture limits the amount of light coming into a lens, and reduces bokeh (the out-of-focus areas that make portrait mode pleasing). Traditional smartphone cameras don't have apertures because they're very small and need as much light as they can get.

Jeremy Kanter @jeremykanter.com · 04/09/2026
Since we're less than a week out and I still haven't seen any solid reporting in this, I think the reports about the iPhone potentially getting a variable-aperture camera are missing a key point: that it will unlock better portrait mode through computational photography.

I would 100% support a law that says if any digital platform removes your access to media you paid for then they are required to refund you the entirety of the original purchase price. That would solve this whole thing in a hurry.

Whoa. Had no idea you could do this. For years I've been booting up Firefox whenever I need to select the column of a table (I believe the command key lets you do this in Firefox).

I need everyone to see how hard the Phoenix Closures logo went in the 90s before they decided to ruin it in 2018.
A visual comparison of the bold 1990 logo that makes excellent use of white space, and the weird not-quite-monoline 2018 logo with barely recognizable bird and fire elements.

I made a little Mac utility that automatically disables your MacBook's built-in display when an external display is connected. It's for folks like me who don't like fiddling with multi-monitor setups.

Pittsburgh Regional Transit just shipped out their fancy new bus cards to everyone… and affixed them to the mailer with the most disgusting, impossible to remove goo I've ever encountered. Like, I just want to pay with my phone. But instead I have to add the world's stickiest card to my wallet.

Graphic design is my passion.
A sign that has two concentric rings of text but it's laid out in a confusing way so it looks like the first sentence is "it's against the law to keep alcohol out of the hands of youth" and the second sentence is "supply alcohol to minors."

It's not without its own unique faults and challenges, but more social media apps should follow the Tweetbot/Ivory/Reeder model of scrolling from past to present.

banning infinite scroll for minors is a good example. infinite scroll is bad and designed to keep you enganged longer. make that shit illegal. bring back pages or something. idk. figure it out

social media that's bad for minors is obviously bad for adults too. crazy to me that the move seems to be to just accept that and ban minors rather than regulate the obvious design patterns that were put in there on purpose which make it harmful to its users

Then, in March, students at my eleven-year-old daughter's public middle school began receiving new Google Chromebooks, and that is when I heard the tap-tap of the cloven hooves approaching our doorstep. The Chromebooks, which the students use in every class and for homework, came pre-installed with an all-ages version of Gemini, a suite of A.I. tools. When my daughter, who is in sixth grade, begins writing an essay, she gets a prompt: "Help me write." If she is starting work on a slide-show presentation, the prompt is "Help me visualize." She shoos away these interruptions, but they persist: "Help me edit." "Beautify this slide." The image generator is there, if she'd ever wish to pull the plug on her imagination. The Gemini chatbot is there, if she ever wants to talk to no one.

If Ternus can bring Apple's software, services, and developer relations up to the level that Apple's hardware has reached under his watch, the company will be in very good hands. But that’s a big if.
