I wrote recently about placing ancestors on a map. Well, yesterday I got a chance to see one of the locations for this Lynch family. They bought this plot in rural St. Clair County, Michigan, in summer 1867. #familyhistory #genealogy #ancestry #history #puremichigan

I don’t usually see this type of passive-aggressive advice to the next generation on a stone. George Spencer Sr., d. 1911: “He paid his debts and was four square with everyone. He was a good dad. It will be fortunate for you son if you are like him.” Like, don’t mess up the family name, junior.
Standing grave marker in a rural Michigan cemetery. Inscription:

George Spencer Sr.
Mar. 19, 1828
Dec. 27, 1911

He paid his debts and was four square with everyone. He was a good dad. It will be fortunate for you son if you are like him.

I haven’t found anything useful from a hint for a while. Ancestry is bad on this, but MyHeritage is awful. Every hint there seems to be someone’s FamilySearch tree. Like, I can find that on FamilySearch.

Not uncommon. I see successes and failures, sometimes one right after another. Like, you had all this property, all you had to do was hold on to it. But I never know what they went through beyond what’s on the documents.

Came across this gem of a litho ad in an 1880s Detroit city directory today. Just a stunner. #genealogy #history #Detroit
Vibrantly colored lithograph ad from an 1880s Detroit city directory featuring an exotic theme with a reclining royal-looking woman, a lion, swords and other iconography. Ad copy reads “Calvert Lithographing Co., Detroit, Mich.”

Oh that’s a coveted one. That was part of a trip to our state archives to search microfilm. I worked for that document. 🤪 I had a whole group of Germans to look up. The Carl/Charles mixup also helps me bridge his German and U.S. records.

You hit it right on the spot. He was ethnically German and from Pomerania. And, he went by Carl in the old country and Charles here.

On one of the declarations I have, my ancestor’s first name is spelled two different ways: Carl and Charles. I think it’s super interesting, because the form is a half a page, and the lines are just not that far away from each other.

Celebrating little #genealogy breakthroughs. I’m following a township parcel over time for clues to the fate of a 5g gf William Lynch. On an 1897 map, a Lizzie Edwards is on the parcel. Then it clicks: I had a theory William’s daughter Elizabeth married an Edwards. Pieces fit, need more of them.

I enjoy finding ancestors’ land on modern maps. Just located land my 4g grandfather Joseph Freeman sold in Normanby, Ontario, in 1866, right before the family moved to Michigan. It’s at 43.9838967, -80.7985462 if you’re curious. Doesn’t look like it’s changed much in 160 years. #genealogy #ancestry

This isn't the first time the USA has placed 50% tariffs on Canada. In 1890, the USA's Tariff Act was touted as a way to build up American industry, but the true goal was forcing the annexation of Canada. It backfired and made Canada stronger. This is the story. 📸 LoC 🧵1/10

Favorite so far was to find a probate packet for a 4ggf who disappeared from Michigan records aft. 1870. His brother filed for administration, and laid out a whole tale that said why he vanished from Michigan records 30 years earlier. His wife had taken the kids and left, so he went back to Canada.
