I wrote recently about placing ancestors on a map. Well, yesterday I got a chance to see one of the locations for this Lynch family. They bought this plot in rural St. Clair County, Michigan, in summer 1867. #familyhistory #genealogy #ancestry #history #puremichigan

I don’t usually see this type of passive-aggressive advice to the next generation on a stone. George Spencer Sr., d. 1911: “He paid his debts and was four square with everyone. He was a good dad. It will be fortunate for you son if you are like him.” Like, don’t mess up the family name, junior.

Mentioned recently the murder of my 4th ggm, so delving in a bit as I research more. Elisabeth "Betsey" Lynch died 4 Jan 1866 by her brother's hand. Newspaper says, "words are indeed too tame to describe the deed," but then goes on in unsparing detail that I'm not sharing here. #genealogy #ancestry
Newspaper clipping from 5 January 1866. Story describes the vicious murder of a woman by her brother in Connor's Creek, an area of Grosse Pointe Township, Wayne County, Michigan.

Fun #genealogy fact: I'm second cousin twice removed to astronaut John Glenn. I heard growing up we were related. As a baby genealogist, it was one of my first "proofs." My ggf Russ and his mother Clara were first cousins. Photo shows them at a family event ~1905. #familyresearch #ancestry #history
Joseph Russel "Russ" Johnson and Clara Sproat Glenn c. 1905. Excerpt of a photo passed down through the Johnson family, which married into the Sproat family of southeast Ohio. Astronaut and Sen. John Glenn's mother Clara (pictured) was born a Sproat. Photo was likely taken at an event celebrating their grandparents' 50th wedding anniversary. Joseph Sproat and Elizabeth Milliken were married 9 October 1855, potentially dating the photo to 1905.

Can officially trace my #Michigan roots to before statehood. My pioneer ancestor cut a farm from the wilds of Kent County — while mostly blind for several years in late 1830s. Eight generations later, his hard work paid off in the form of this nice lapel pin for his #genealogy obsessed descendant.
Circular copper-colored pin on a green background. Pin has the words “Pre-Statehood Families Michigan Before 1837” around the edge with symbols of a log cabin and white pines in the center.

This month 147 years ago 5g gm Aurilla "Rilla" Patterson Spaulding died. She pioneered Kent County, Mich., with husband Orleans Spaulding in 1836. Shortly after, he went blind for about 7 years, so Rilla was a "bad ass" in the vernacular of the day. #genealogy #ancestry #familyresearch #history
Clip from an 1879 newspaper in the Grand Rapids, Michigan, area. Transcribed:

Pioneer Matron Gone.—In Paris, on Sun-
day, the 16th inst., Mrs. Orleans Spaulding
died, rather suddenly, though she had been
in poor health for several years. Mrs. S.
was very highly esteemed, and a very large
concourse of the neighbors and friends at-
tended the funeral, at which Rev. Mr. Thom-
as, of Cascade, delivered the discourse. The
family were among the earliest settlers, in
1836, and during the first few years, Mr.
Spaulding was afflicted with blindness, while
they were wholly dependent upon what could
be raised from their farm for subsistence, and
the strong will and heroic fortitude of his
wife carried them through the struggles in-
cidents to that period. They have raised five
sons and two daughters, now of mature age,
some of them with families, with whom a
large circle of neighbors and friends join in
sympathy and appreciation of her virtues,
whose memory they cherish.

Do you feel this way? Take a swig of Dr. Pierce’s Golden Medical Discovery. Purify your blood, keep consumption at bay and get your nerves back. Don’t be wheedled. #genealogy #familyresearch #ancestry #history
Newspaper ad from 1911:

Headline: Do You Feel This Way?

Text: Do you feel all tired out? Do you sometimes think you just can’t work away at your profession or trade any longer? Do you have a poor appetite, and lay awake at nights unable to sleep? Are your nerves all gone, and your stomach too? Has ambition to forge ahead in the world left you? If so, you might as well put a stop to your misery. You can do it if you will. Dr. Pierce’s Golden Medical Discovery will make you a different individual. It will set your lazy liver to work. It will set things right in your stomach, and your appetite will come back. It will purify your blood. If there is any tendency in your family toward consumption, it will keep that dread destroyer away. Even after consumption has almost gained a foothold in the form of a lingering cough, bronchitis, or bleeding at the lungs, it will bring about a cure in 98 per cent. of all cases. It is a remedy prepared by Dr. R. V. Pierce, of Buffalo, N. Y., whose advice is given free to all who wish to write him. His great success has come from his wide experience and varied practice. Don’t be wheedled by a penny-grabbing dealer into taking inferior substitutes for Dr. Pierce’s medicines, recommended to be “just as good.” Dr. Pierce’s medicines are of KNOWN COMPOSITION. Their every ingredient printed on their wrappers. Made from roots without alcohol. Contain no habit-forming drugs. World’s Dispensary Medical Association, Buffalo, N. Y.

For years, I've tried to find evidence of the fate of a 4g gf who appeared to fall off the planet ~1875-'80. Could find records for everyone else in the household. Turns out, his wife left w/the kids. He went back to Canada and died in an asylum in 1907. #genealogy #familyresearch #ancestry #history
Snippet from an ancestor Joseph Freeman's probate packet. This is a sworn statement from Joseph's brother John K. Freeman about Joseph Freeman's return to Canada without his family:

"The aforenamed Joseph Froemen was married over fifty years ego and had a family of five ohildren. He left these parts for the State of Michigen very soon after his marriage and settled on a farm there. He returned alone about forty yeara ago and it was learned from him that his wife had left him taking her children with her and going further west. The said Joseph Freeman lived with me and in the neighborhood of my residence above named for some twenty years and then want west to Manitobe and farmed there lor some time, returning again a year ago last July. Shortly afterwards he became demented and last surmer was committed to Rockwood Asylum for the Insane where his decease ocourred last month. After his return from Michigen and until the present date no trace whetever has been had of his wife or children and their present whereabouts is completely unknown to me."

Genealogists read about death. A lot. But this one borders on paranormal. I followed a line down to disprove a couple as parents to a research target, and one of their daughters was killed by lightning inside a church during a funeral. It was clearly her time. #genealogy #ancestry #familyresearch

Appears 4g uncle William had impulse control issues. Accused of "seduction" in the summer of 1874, he fled to damn near Dubuque, Iowa from Kent County, Michigan. Dragged back by a deputy weeks later. I'm pretty sure he did not, in fact, wed Ms. Annis. #genealogy #ancestry #familyresearch #history
Old newspaper clip:

Alleged Seduction.

Ella Annis, a maiden 26 years old, now living in the township of Cascade, accused William Van Amburg of seduction. William went away some five or six weeks ago, and quietly dropped down in Jo Daviess County, Illinois, there to await news of further developments here. Of course letters came from him and went to him, and the officers found out his whereabouts. Ella was anxious that he should be brought back to her, and the proper papers being obtained Deputy Sheriff Steketee started after him Wednesday night, 22d. He was gone about forty-eight hours, traveled about 600 miles, and last night arrived in the city with William. William is in jail awaiting an examination, or his wedding, calamities that do not seem to dampen his spirits at all.

On a photo excursion to a local cemetery today, I was struck by this large monument to three children, aged 15, 5 and 7 months. Looked up the family: Two of the kids fell to diphtheria and the infant died of pertussis, two of the three maladies covered by the DTaP shot. #genealogy #ancestry #history
Scene of a cemetery on a cloudy day. Large monument in the foreground shows the names and death dates of three children, Nellie, Grace A. and John H., who all died in 1879. Stone notes that they are children of Sherman and Mary Williams.

Fun with #genealogy. Often, flat or flush markers for graves end up below grade after a few decades. That can make them a challenge to find, but when you do find them you can sometimes see interesting designs in the roots of the peeled-back grass. #genealogy #ancestry #familyresearch #cemetery
Flat grave marker revealed by peeling back sod. Roots of the grass follow an imprint of the lettering on the stone.

How far back does your #immigrant story go? Opportunity brought the parents of these teens — Dolores and Miguel, my g aunt and uncle — from rural Mexico all the way to Saginaw, Michigan, by ~1923. I’m here and who I am because they were here and who they were. #genealogy #familyresearch #ancestry
Photo of two Mexican American teens in the Midwest from around 1925. Both are dressed in their finery. Two roses lay on a small table between them.

Sometimes, lessons in impermanence make a lasting impression. This fallen leaf will be with us for a while.
