Very excited to visit Hangzhou, #China! This afternoon in the 14:00 session, @veerahelmisofia.bsky.social @anavili.bsky.social and I will talk about pupil size, attention, and retinal responses. 👁️ ⭐ #escopcopm2026

Online Now: Beyond arousal: pupil fluctuations, neural activity, and behavior
dlvr.it
Beyond arousal: pupil fluctuations, neural activity, and behavior
Spontaneous fluctuations in pupil size are correlated with neural activity and behavior in many ways. This is generally attributed to a single underlying cause: arousal. This unitary account disregards other potential underlying causes. To address this gap, we propose a comprehensive framework of four mechanisms that jointly underlie the complex and context-dependent relationships between spontaneous pupil-size fluctuations, neural activity, and behavior. In addition to arousal, we consider optical effects, brightness constancy, and self-generated visual stimulation. Based on this framework, we argue that pupil fluctuations should be considered beyond arousal, as a functionally important, yet still poorly understood, component of visual processing.

Super excited to see our review out in TiCS! Here me & @cogsci.nl present the first comprehensive framework of the mechanisms driving relationships between spontaneous pupil-size fluctuations, neural activity, and behavior 👀🧠👩🏻‍💻 Spoiler: arousal is only one of at least four 😶‍🌫️ doi.org/10.1016/j.ti...

✨ New preprint ✨ With @cogsci.nl we show that larger pupils provide an advantage for near-threshold detection in the visual domain but not in the auditory domain 👀👂 We suggest that this effect is driven by optics 💡 (in addition to arousal ⚡) Check it out! ⬇️ www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6...

Larger Pupils are Associated with Improved Visual, but not Auditory, Near-Threshold Detection
Prestimulus pupil size is associated with near-threshold detection performance in both the visual and auditory domain, a relationship that is commonly attributed to arousal. However, given that larger...

Have you thought of using unchained pupillometry to infer effort/arousal with _uncontrolled_ visual stimulation? Sounds crazy? @yuqingc.bsky.social shows that convolutional modeling of pupil responses with gaze-contingent luminance changes finally allows just that! www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6...

⚡Does attention operate *inside* an afterimage?⚡ We show that it does and that this is reliably tracked by the pupil! Once again, the pupil proves to be a pretty amazing window into the mind👁️, but what does this mean for attention? Check out our preprint! www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6... @cogsci.nl

How robust is the large-pupil advantage in visual detection? Turns out, very! Here we show with @cogsci.nl that the effect persists for different stimulus colors, eccentricities, and retinal adaptation-states ✨👀 Check it out in JEP:HPP: doi.org/10.1037/xhp0...

🚨Pupillometrists! Reviewer2: “But what if changing pupil size unintentionally affected arousal?” 👁️ Now we give you the answer! In collaboration with Snell lab www.snelllab.eu, we show that you can safely manipulate pupil size, via ipRGC activation, without unintentionally altering arousal!
