I use this example to talk about how science works (and how it doesn’t) in my book “Fakten sind auch nur Meinungen” from 2024, but unfortunately it’s not out in English so far. You can find it in German or Korean, though, anywhere you get your books (plus there’s an audiobook version in German)

This week I’m in a hotel room that starts smelling like coffee every morning around the time my alarm goes off, and I’m inclined to give the hotel an excellent review just based on that

100% agree with Bryan. This kind of thing also predates LLMs; i.e. it has been done before with simpler machine learning algorithms. So I guess it’s just being revamped now that there’s AI hype going on anyway.

This is a bit of a parlor trick and is being hyped. The images are not being generated de-novo. They are being matched with a known set of prior images or text, meaning that they reconstruct the signals recorded by brain when shown images during training. Verrrry different than reading thoughts.

They quoted me in this New Yorker piece about AI today. www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...
“Let’s say there’s a world or time line I exist in where A.I. has been subject to regulation. It is ethical. It has no footprint environmentally,” the novelist Jeff VanderMeer, a prominent critic of A.I., told me over the phone. “With those guardrails in place, would I read an A.I. book? All I can say is no. And the reason is, in part, because I want to read something coming from a particular mind.” Using A.I., he said, “feels like a betrayal of the whole point of why you’re a writer.”

I made a meme
That one meme from Invincible. A superhero labeled "some random guy with an acoustic guitar" watches some fighter jets labeled "AI music generators" and says "Look at what they need to mimic a fraction of our power"

In its prospectus, Anthropic just told investors it's losing tens of billions of dollars a year, but also growing like crazy, and — oh yeah — its own AI might pose an existential risk to humanity.

Fun random difference between English and German: in German, you can’t kill something that isn’t alive, and you can’t destroy something that is. So both “kill the lights” and “authorities had the wild bear destroyed” need to be slightly rephrased to make sense in German.

Permanence will be the priority. His tribute doesn't have to be beautiful, it has to be non-removable

The big risk isn't that AI will destroy civilization. It's that AI-based enshittification will progress so far that we'll all *wish* civilization would be destroyed. I call this the "is Trump going to shut down the CDC" dilemma.

Forty years it had taken him to learn what kind of smile was hidden beneath the dark mustache. O cruel, needless misunderstanding! O stubborn, self-willed exile from the loving breast! Two gin-scented tears trickled down the sides of his nose.
But it was all right, everything was all right, the struggle was finished. He had won the victory over himself. He loved generative Al.
