Starting the day with good news! Amazon just emailed me that Cassandra Gannon has a new book out today. Heart of the Light Kingdom. I recommend reading the earlier books in the series first (I mean, why miss out?) Original and quirky contemporary fantasy romance. amzn.asia/d/0gSGNM7i #booksky

Friday flower Spinifex is in flower following recent rains in the region. Spinifex, or tjanpi, has many traditional uses. The seeds can be milled to make seedcakes, the fibres are used for weaving, and the resin is a powerful adhesive used in spear making. #wildoz #nativeflora

When I stop to think about it, so many cultures use feathers in costume and ritual that this was an obvious gap in protection/magic customs.

1,900 year-old Roman birthday invitation! 🎉 🥳 From Claudia Severa to her friend Sulpicia Lepidina, it’s one of the earliest known examples of writing in Latin by a woman! Found at Vindolanda fort, it gives a glimpse of social life on Rome’s northern frontier! 📷 me #RomanFortThursday #Archaeology
My photo shows a Roman wooden writing tablet (Vindolanda tablet no. 291) with a birthday invitation written in ink. The invitation is from Claudia Severa, wife of Aelius Brocchus, to Sulpicia Lepidina, wife of Flavius Cerealis, the commander at Vindolanda fort on the northern frontier of Britannia. The writing tablet is made up of two square, wafer thin, pieces of wood, displayed side by side. Each piece is now somewhat fragmentary, with pieces of wood missing in places. The wood is mid-brown in colour with dark text, and is displayed on a cream mount. The text is written in cursive Latin. Most of the text was written by a scribe, but Claudia adds in her own hand “I shall expect you, sister. Farewell, sister, my dearest soul, as I hope to prosper, and hail” making this one of the earliest known examples of writing in Latin by a woman. Dimensions: Width 22.3 cm × Height 9.6 cm. Dated c. 97 - 103 AD. From Vindolanda Fort, Northumberland. Now in the British Museum collections.

I assumed that the clubhouse chats were happening solely in private groups these days and that my favourite activity (lurking) no longer garnered interesting news. Is there a turn back to public, everyone welcome convo? Do people still want to expand networks rather than retreat?

Neanderthals living in a rock shelter in Spain left behind quite a few wooden tools more than 40,000 years ago, including two spears, a club, and some shallow bowls (possibly). They decayed—but left impressions. archaeology.org/news/2026/10/12/impressions-of-wooden-neanderthal-tools-found-in-spain/

Lovely limestone plaque carved with the face of an owl! 🦉❤️ The solemn gaze from across the centuries gives an air of ancient wisdom! From Egypt, Late Period–Ptolemaic Period, 400–30 BC. Met Museum 📷 by me #OwlishMonday #Archaeology
My photo shows a small, roughly square-shaped piece of limestone carved to depict a frontal face of an owl. The owl has large, rounded eyes and a long, pointed beak highlighted with fine diagonal incised lines. The face is outlined by two symmetrical fan-like feather patterns with a raised border around the eyes, cheeks, and beak. Dimensions: Height 10.3 cm x Width 11.1 cm x Depth 2.5 cm This relief represents the ancient Egyptian owl hieroglyph 'm'. The limestone plaque is displayed in a glass case at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

Before 1777, Falerio Picenus was a nearly perfectly-preserved #Roman town. Then Pius VI’s diggers arrived. For #MosaicMonday, we examine this Antonine-era leopard #emblema, stripped from a private #domus and treated as #spolia in the Vatican's Scala Simonetti. #AncientBluesky 🏺
ROMAN MOSAIC EMBLEMA OF A LEOPARD FROM FALERIO PICENUS, MID-LATE C2 CE. VATICAN MUSEUMS

A Roman mosaic panel featuring a leopard walking left, depicted with brown and ochre tesserae, framed by a guilloche border. Falerio Picenus was a pristine Roman town until 1777, when Pope Pius VI's excavators arrived to furnish the Museo Pio-Clementino. Stripped from a private domus and cemented into the Scala Simonetti as spolia, this emblema invites reflection. Devoid of Dionysian symbols, the leopard is pure physical threat. Yet, frozen in mosaic, it is utterly tamed. For the Roman diners reclining above it, this apex predator was a conversational set-piece about empire, bringing the wild safely into the domestic sphere. Ultimately, the true predator was not the leopard, but the papal excavators. The homeowners were safe from the beast beneath their feet, but Falerio Picenus had no protection from the C18 diggers who tore the town apart to feed the Vatican collections.
