Sherdar Madrasa at the Registan Square in Samarkand — Vasily Vereshchagin, 1869-1870.
A painting of a beautiful building in an Islamic Style. a couple of smokestack-like Towers, a couple of pointed domes. the facade is decorated colorfully.
the square in front of the madrasa is quiet but the life of the city is going on: people walking around, people selling things

Last thought of the day: Being human includes the desire to encounter the "other". That desire drives exploration. It creates cryptids, tells stories of angels & demons, and hopes for aliens. It imagines AI as something more than it currently is. AI is not yet other. It is echoes of our existence.

Ornate Saxon copper disc brooch decorated with gold and garnets, AD 650-670. It must have been a treasured possession! From Floral Street, Covent Garden, once the heart of ‘Lundenwic’, the early Saxon town of London. Museum of London 📷 by me #FindsFriday #Archaeology
My photo shows a circular Saxon brooch made of copper, the front of which is ornately embellished with gold and garnets. There are five raised, circular, gold bosses which are outlined with inlaid garnet slabs, and each set with a central, round garnet. Four of the gold bosses are arranged around a fifth, larger, gold boss in the centre of the brooch. The central boss sits within a star-like, four-pointed geometric shape composed of a mosaic of inlaid garnet slabs. The outer edge of the brooch is decorated with two rows of tiny inlaid polished garnets. The eight gold sections at either side of the four smaller bosses are decorated with raised gold filigree which looks like looped, braided cord. Parts of the brooch are worn, with some chipped edges, and missing garnet stones. The brooch measures approximately 7 cm in diameter. It is displayed on a clear glass surface. It was excavated from a woman's grave by AOC Archaeology in 2000 ahead of development construction works. This type of brooch was a fashionable status piece amongst wealthy aristocratic Anglo-Saxon women in the AD 600s. The woman's grave also contained glass beads and silver rings.

Van Deman was a photographer, compiling an invaluable documentary archive of >2,700 images capturing ancient ruins & the expansion of modern Rome. Her 1934 book, "The Building of the Roman Aqueducts," is a definitive & monumental study of Rome's complex ancient water infrastructure. #archaeology
A bird's-eye architectural photograph taken in 1903 by pioneering American archaeologist Dr. Esther Boise Van Deman (1862–1937). The image captures a highly detailed, monochrome sepia view of an active archaeological excavation site in the Roman Forum, highlighting the House of the Vestals (Atrium Vestae) and surrounding ruins. In the center foreground, a prominent circular brick foundation is arranged like a wheel with radiating wedge-shaped segments around a dark, circular core. To its left sits an elongated, rectangular stone basin or pool. Beyond this central area, a low stone wall features a neat row of weathered, ancient marble statues standing atop pedestals. In the upper left background, a massive classic structure stands tall with a grand portico supported by multiple towering Corinthian columns. Scattered rubble, blocks of stone, and trenches run across the landscape, which is bounded in the lower foreground by a wooden protective guardrail and a terracotta tiled roof structure. The composition is framed tightly from an elevated vantage point, emphasizing structural layouts, masonry lines, and brick patterns. The mood is analytical and historic, documenting the precise layered textures of ancient Roman concrete and brickwork that Van Deman systematically used to establish the standard chronological dating framework for classical Roman monuments.

There is a moment at the very very end of Abdul El-Sayed's podcast with Ezra Klein (book recommendation section) where he talks about the idea of "speaking truth to pain" and this will be staying with me for an extremely long time. www.nytimes.com/2026/09/25/o...
But there’s also something about truth to pain. We talk a lot about truth to power, but I think it’s actually a lot harder to speak truth to pain. I say that as someone who went to medical school, realizing that in a lot of our politics right now, we’ve got to get a lot better at speaking truth to pain if we’re going to get through some of these challenges that we have.

What does “truth to pain” mean?

It’s one thing to look power in the eye and say: You’re wrong about this. But there’s a way in which pain is very difficult to reason with. Because when somebody is in their pain, they’re in their trauma. They see that pain, and they may not see what’s causing it.

I remember just very explicitly being in a trauma ward with a gunshot wound patient and watching this big guy with his hand on his gunshot wound. All the folks are trying to pull his hand off his pain, that point of his gunshot wound, this clear vulnerability.

And this emergency room doctor had the presence of mind to be like: Everyone, stop. And she looks him in the eyes, and she’s like: I get that really hurts, and I’m so sorry that you’re here. You don’t want to be here. We don’t want you to be here. But if you don’t let us fix this, you could die. So I’m going to take your hand, and I’m going to move it off, OK? Because I need to get there so that you can live.

She was speaking truth to pain. He understands he’s at the hospital, he needs care, but he also doesn’t want anybody to touch the wound. Which is a natural thing. And I think it is a really great metaphor for how we think about a lot of these challenges we talked about today.
