Thursday birdsday! Splendid fairywrens are found through much of arid and semi-arid Australia, in mulga and mallee woodland. Males will pluck pink and purple flower petals to give to females as a courting gift.  #wildoz #birds #birdsofaustralia

Scaly Sunday Slurp! This beaded gecko was snapped in the act of cleaning its eyeball with its tongue. Most geckos do not have movable eyelids – licking them keeps them clean and free of sand and debris. #wildoz #reptiles

Friday flower It’s definitely eyecatching, but the hot pink you see on the desert hop-bush is not flowers, it’s fruit.  These plants are found in mallee scrub and woodland across much of southern Australia. #wildoz #nativeflora

Thursday birdsday! Featuring one of the most distinctive crests in the cockatoo world, the pink cockatoo is found through much of arid Australia. Friday Flower The cactus pea, or cactus bossiaea, grows in mallee and low, open woodland, and on rocky outcrops across much of southern Australia. It flowers between July and November, and will often flower again after seed has set if it gets rain after a dry period. #wildoz #nativeflora

Recent rains along Googs Track created ideal conditions for mushrooms. These beauties were spotted during fieldwork. Mushrooms are the fruiting bodies of fungus that lives beneath the soil, which can extend for large distances. #wildoz #mushrooms

Thursday birdsday! They’re shy and difficult to see in the wild, but nganamara (malleefowl) leave plenty of evidence when they’re active. Nganamara use leaf litter to create warmth for their eggs, scraping it up from beneath the trees and into their nest mounds. #wildoz #birdsofaustralia #NHT

Feral Friday We’re working to control foxes in our region, using Felixers, canid pest ejectors and 4G-connected traps. These trail cam images show why – foxes are highly effective predators, taking prey varying in size from hopping mice to goannas. Reducing fox numbers is vital. #wildoz #ferals #NHT

Thursday Birdsday! The shy heathwren is usually found in mallee woodland. They feed mostly on ground-dwelling insects, and sometimes seeds. Their dome-shaped nests are built close to the ground in grass tussocks or shrubs. #wildoz #birdsofaustralia #birds

Monotreme Monday This echidna was spotted crossing Googs Track during recent fieldwork. Echidnas – along with platypus – are monotremes, an odd group of mammals that lay eggs as well as giving milk. When threatened, they partially bury themselves and curl into a ball. #wildoz #echidna

Friday Flower Don’t mistake this for your backyard dandelion – while they look similar, the showy burr-daisy would be a prickly addition to your garden.  Found in the arid and semi-arid regions of Australia, it releases prickly burrs shaped like fishhooks. They stick to everything! #wildoz

AW staff and Yalata Rangers carried out some maintenance on the Celium trap network on the Yalata coast recently, servicing feral predator traps and trail cameras. One of the trail cameras had snapped a cat with a hopping mouse, showing the need for the project to protect native species.
