It’s been two years since Ontario Place West Island was destroyed for a planned private spa. Hundreds of trees were cut down - here’s a snapshot of the many species who lost habitat. 🧵
Side-by-side comparison of a landscape on the Toronto waterfront. In one scene, an island is covered in trees reflected in a still channel of water. The other image of the same place shows a barren stretch land with a pile of rubble in the centre.

It will be interesting to see how Slo Pitch does on Crave - I don’t think it’s gotten US distribution yet.

All of which is to say there are lots of different audience segments that don’t get much attention and the studios seem to have finally noticed that women watch TV, but that doesn’t mean that the queerness isn’t also important for a lot of viewers.

Eg Off Campus was cute but the original music was entirely forgettable and if someone offered me a million dollars I couldn’t remember one visually interesting scene or photography choice.

At the same time, one does get the feeling that some of these shows are being knocked out to satisfy a “formula”, sort of like the record-label created boy bands and girl bands of the late 90s.

I sort of half agree with this. Romance as a genre (as many female-coded interests) has largely been ignored on TV, so I think any reasonably well-done romance is probably going to do well on streaming, hockey or not (see eg the Love Hypothesis)

That Canada was modeling its response to a potential invasion by the USA was widely reported in January, so this isn’t really news - except to an American audience, which is presumably the target here.

Yeah, and it seems like it would motivate businesses to incur those Capex expenditures *now* when the economy is going to need the boost rather than waiting for stronger economic times.

‘The fat cat middlemen in your provincial legislatures have collectively decided on your behalf that you can’t freely work and travel in Europe because doing so would tread on the powers they think they have over you’ would be a great way to solve a bunch of problems at once imo.

Here it seems like Americans are trying to use it as a cudgel for why Canadians should trust the next US admin, and I would argue that this is in fact a reason to diversify our relationships - if you *almost* followed your friend over a cliff, it’s probably a good idea to broaden your friend group.

Also, unlike a lot of European countries and even Canada where medical education is heavily subsidized, specialists have *massive* student debt and don’t really start making money until sometimes well into their 30s.

Short answer: no, a tax ruling just means you know in advance how a particular structure will be taxed, so there are no surprises. Different structures have different tax treatments and investors typically want to know upfront what taxes are going to be payable (certainty + predictability).

We share and land border with Denmark and a maritime border with France. Canadians understand the geography perfectly well; it’s the shared political interests that are driving this.

In Canada at least, you have to be living together *and* in a conjugal relationship. The intention when the law evolved was to provide protection to (mostly lower income/marginalized) women at a time when most women were still dependent on their male partner.

I think what some people forget (especially if they aren’t physically in Ottawa) is the weird internal wheeling and dealing that goes on behind closed doors. I think if Carney hasn’t stayed at the table as long as he did that there would have MPs from affected regions in revolt.

There’s a real reluctance to accept that the America they/we thought we knew no longer exists. It’s painful because the US is, sometimes quite literally, family.

I think the bigger factor is the close ties of that class to the US. I’m at a Bay Street firm and *a lot* of people (myself included) have some sort of US tie - US family, went to US schools, have kids at US colleges in sports scholarships etc.

It is always precarious these days to assume people know things. Canada is an officially bilingual nation. A demand the country remove regulations that require both French and English on product labels is an attack on sovereignty. No possible way Carney could, or should, accept that.

There are already pretty strong hints that it was (1) restrictions on who Canada could do trade deals with and (2) restrictions on French language requirements (which would almost certainly be unconstitutional, in addition to being totally unacceptable to Quebec).
