Does this count for #birdoftheday? Last year's birthday tattoo of a pohowera (or banded dotterel) by my very talented sibling
A tattoo of a pohowera on my forearm. It's a cute little shore bird that nests out at Kaitorete Birdlings Flat, with a stout little beak and banded markings on its front.

This piece absolutely nails it and is a must read. This paragraph brought me to a standstill because it's also how we've gone from broad acceptance of trans people to journalists including comment from "gender criticals" fighting for "common sense" on every trans story.
Another layer of consideration: even if this is a genuine representation of a plethora of parental voices, we should consider also how it can be deployed in media disputes going forward. It is expressly positioned as a voice for parents, in opposition to teachers or public servants. What this will mean in practice, it seems likely, is that every time something new is introduced to the education system, the media will balance out the teacher or ministry explanation with a Parents Alliance reply. Detailed research and evidence-based conclusions will be held to the standard of
"common sense". And that, de facto, will serve the greater project of the right, undermining the idea of government itself.

Last month @paulapenfold.bsky.social wrote this excellent piece interrogating a NZF candidate's disinformation about abortion. Today the leader of that party quite clearly shared the dogwhistle version of that rhetoric unchallenged. www.stuff.co.nz/politics/361...
From Penfold's article:

Mundt said the abortion legislation had been "shrouded in controversy".
"It was passed just as the country was going into covid lockdowns," she wrote,
"so the focus of the nation was divertedẠại
She said NZ First had "put forward a conscience vote" and its MPs voted against the bill at its third reading.
"Their (sic) is NO upper limit to the age of a baby being aborted. If two practitioners agree, a baby can be killed right up to the day of birth," Mundt continued. From Peters' interview today:

Asked about abortion, Peters said "the facts" were worth revisiting.
"At its worst, and it's a matter of timing, but it shades into a thing called murder. You got me here?
"It shades into a thing called murder or assassination, get any name you like. But that's the purpose. We've got to know the facts."

Look this “oh sorry you’re talking to my leadersona not the minister” nonsense is getting farcical. I understand very well the separation of different capacities but surely it was never meant to be used solely to dodge accountability as it has been this year.
Deputy Prime Minister and Act leader David Seymour echoed Luxon in branding the comments as "attention-seeking behaviour" and felt it prudent not to give them oxygen.
He acknowledged they were inappropriate comments for a Foreign Minister to make, but noted Peters was speaking in his capacity as
NZ First leader. The Minister of Foreign Affairs says he stands by Winston Peters' statements (aka his own)
Later on Thursday, in a statement

attributed to Luxon as "National Party

leaderi, the prime minister said Peters'

comments weren't appropriate. But he

did not respond to Stuff's question

about whether he maintained

confidence in Peters as foreign minister.

The willingness to explicitly revise history to justify the removal of rights to exist in public with no parliamentary or democratic oversight by claiming those rights never existed in the first place should concern everyone.
The story we're expected to believe is that at the very end of the Brown government, ministers drafted an aggressive bathroom ban, utterly at odds with both our international com-mitments, EU caselaw, and the trans inclusive GRA they had passed 6 years previously. Unfortunately, no one else noticed that's what the law said. And because they never bothered to point it out, it remained unenforced for a decade and a half. During which time the British government would issue travel advisories to American states who have passed similar bans and Labour MPs would declare them "malicious" and confidently state that such a thing would "never be passed in the UK." Then, in the year of our lord 2025, our Supreme Court uncovered the truth: we had in fact had such a ban on the books the whole time!
