It's like when law students lose points for throwing in a "likely" for something that's clearly correct, but the opposite.

I think you could write a paper analyzing that passage, which was constructed with plausible deniability but then delivered with a threatening tone and obvious relish for the violence, which the cheering crowd correctly interpreted.

One thing that stuck with me from this episode is Leerhsen's comments about the intimacy of transit when it comes to parents and kids. Being able to have your kid sit on your lap and share a moment with them is something truly wonderful about it and not at all possible in a car.

The actually relevant comparison for water is not absolute quantities but the strain on particular communities.

You can tell this is bad faith by the choice of almond milk as the comparator. Cow-milk production uses nearly twice as much water (and emits 4.5x as much CO2). Almond milk is the "own the libs" choice.

some questions you can ask to evaluate a new "public bathroom" 1. can a child use it without an adult? 2. can you use it at night? 3. can a disabled person use it? 4. is it owned by a vendor? 5. does it require technology? 6. are people being paid to clean it?

The ruling elite sees in Greek organizations and college sports programs the training ground for an amoral class of speculators, bankers and corporatists who pillage the country. The goal is to train people to subsume themselves into the herd, to unquestioningly use technical and vocational skills to serve the system.

On the crim charges: The argument that the uni had no role, all they could do is hand over a report, campus cops screwed up by leaving out a single word, and then it was up to the real cops and DA ... That is not my experience of how university towns work.

I think part the problem with the T9 panel was that they graded on a curve. They gave their worst punishment to the two worst men, and then they acted like they had to downgrade the rest of the punishments from there.

A young woman just sat next to me on Amtrak and immediately asked to plug in her charger ... and thread the cord behind me (in the window seat) so she (in the aisle seat) count keep using it. I don't actually mind, but I never would have asked.

Part of Barrett's long-term audition for the Supreme Court was writing a law review article arguing that "Catholic judges ... are morally precluded from enforcing the death penalty," but there's an exception for habeas.

This is from an SSRN digest email from over the summer. The associated document is still on SSRN. Did an AI app post this (perhaps after a person typed in a command to post "my recent writings"?), or is this a normal thing for a person to do?

When I said "americana," she thought I'd misunderstood the passage. We went back and forth for a while--not being allowed to switch to English, I struggled a bit to explain myself! (Possibly relevant that the teacher's self-described nationality was "catalana.")

When I was taking Spanish lessons in Barcelona, I got into an argument with my teacher about a reading-comprehension exercise. The passage was about a civil rights activist who was born in NYC after her mother immigrated from Mexico, and the teacher asked me what the activist's nationality was.

Is this person six years old?
For most of my life, I was proud to call myself an early adopter. I didn’t think twice about buying a futuristic gadget or downloading a newfangled app.

But in recent years, my love for the new has started to wane.

I’ve felt overloaded by the gizmos, software updates and A.I.-powered everything that have made life increasingly complicated. New stuff has brought brief utility and enjoyment before taking up permanent residence in the back of an already-cluttered closet.

I thought these new things would bring joy and happiness. So why did they seem to do the opposite?

Historically, automation tech has commonly made more work for people: the issue is WHICH people. Whether as an excuse for owners to increase the requirements for expectations in a given day, lessen the labor expected of men while raising the expectations for women, etc. "AI" isn't exceptional.
