That jacket is magnificent

Jenny Boroh🦋 @jennboroh.bsky.social · 4h

I could go on at length about these books, but to sum up: -I really, really like spaceships -I'm a queer person into Star Trek, surprise surprise -I really, really like stories with transformations in them, hmm, what could that mean

My 9 books that I'll never forget. Titles and authors are in the alt text. Sci-Fi, Pulp Horror, and comic books. Yeah, that's me, all right. Of special note is The Man Who Folded Himself, by David Gerrold, my first real grown-up read at thirteen. More details in the alt text.

My Nine Books, books I will never forget.

The Man Who Folded Himself, by David Gerrold

This one is first on my list, and special to me. It's the ultimate time travel story, with the protagonist being the ultimate self-centered jackass. Still, in their travels, they meet the female version of themselves, and that struck me strongly. I think it was my first inkling of my own transgendered nature, in my early teens.

The Forever War, by Joe Haldeman
The Star Fleet Technical Manual. by Franz Joeseph

Spacecraft: 2000 to 2100 AD, by Stewart Cowley
Great Space Battles, by Stewart Cowley
Star Trek: The Enterprise Logs, volume 1-4
Steel Beach, by John Varley
The Inhuman Condition, by Clive Barker
The Incredible Shrinking Man, by Richard Matheson

I guess my tastes are pretty lowbrow, but I wouldn't have it any other way.

If I ever get zapped into Star Trek land, I’m making a bee line to Deep Space Nine to book an appointment with Dr. Julian Bashir. He does good work, I’m told, a full transition with one outpatient session, and no worrying about if he’s in network on your insurance plan.

I tried this out. Four bingos on one card. It would have been five, but I’m not just a brick, I’m a full on cinder block, so no getting ‘mistaken’ for a girl, sadly

My ‘teenage dysphoria bingo card’. I mean, just look at it. There’s only four out of a possible 25 I *didn’t* check off.

You’re venting at the sorry state of affairs the current era is, the constant cruelty, the suffering, the brazen injustice, the shocking idiocy of it all. This is a tough time to have compassion and empathy, but there’s nothing wrong with that.

anyone else feel like row 3 column 4 is a little “one of these things is not like the others, and also—mind ya business”? 🤨 anyway they’re filled out in proportion to how much they apply. Yes I spent too much energy on this lol (and did you see the alt text?)

Teenage Dysphoria Bingo - Girl

5 by 5 grid of squares, each with a statement in it. Each statement is filled in with translucent purple in proportion to how much Jen thinks it applied to her as a teenager.

Top row, left to right:

Quote very secretive, doesn't like parents to know what they're doing, no matter what it is unquote is 80% full

Quote doesn't mind or even likes it when they get mistaken for a girl unquote is empty

Quote often physically uncoordinated and weak, clumsy unquote is like 50 or 55% full

Quote loves any kind of transformation themes in media unquote is 110% full

Quote attempts to or wants to crossdress unquote is 80% full

Second row, left to right:

Quote very sensitive, known as a crybaby, shy and quiet unquote is 50% full (crybaby yes, shy/quiet nah)

Quote hates playing competitive sports and being in situations with a strong male dominance hierarchy unquote is 120% full

Quote retreats into fantasy (including sci-fi) worlds and daydreams often unquote is 100% full

Quote gets anxiety in gym changing rooms, hides chest with towel after showers unquote is like 60 or 70% full

Quote very obedient and well-behaved, does whatever parents or teachers tell them to do unquote is 10% full (did what she was told… in the moment)

Third row, left to right:

Quote doesn't really act or think they act "gay", but others suspect they are unquote is 75% full

Quote confused by male-female dynamics and dating once their peers start partaking in it unquote is 25% full

Quote hates getting their hair cut unquote is 75% full

Quote first masturbates in prone position, anal, or other unorthodox manners (ie. not "stroking") unquote is kind of an odd one out among these statements and not anyone’s dang business

Quote bullied or ostracized by their peers unquote is a bit over 50% full

When Lucy from Compass Books in Dartmouth, Devon, was victim to shoplifting people told her to install CCTV. Instead she put this ancient book thief curse on the wall from the Monastery of San Pedro in Barcelona so book stealers would be consumed by "the flames of hell" with "their members blasted".

A Curse Against Stealers Of Books
For him that
stealth a book from
this place, let it
change into a
serpent in his hand
and rend him.
Let him be struck with
palsy,
& all his members
blasted.
Let him languish in
pain crying aloud for
mercy, & let there be be no surcease to his
agony till he sink to
dissolution.
Let bookworms gnaw
his entrails in token of
the Worm that diets not,
& when at last he
goeth to his final
punishment, let the
flames of
hell consume him
forever & aye.
