I call the mushy middle of white people “diet racists” because they’re not there for the hard R or lynching or any of this groyper shit but they’re so easy to convince that a black person took their job.

Which is frankly the white person breakdown, too

Our bonobo side does tend to think “you are neat! You do great things for the pack! Would you like sex?” a lot.
110
Jen in Motion @jeninmotion.bsky.social · 9h
Heck, even why despite Murderbot being not at all interested in sex, i can see why it would be sexualized, largely that it’s a great protector of the group and someone who genuinely cares like that is good parent/bond further in the clan material.

Jen in Motion @jeninmotion.bsky.social · 9h
So one thing I’m thinking about is the depth of the bond and regard between Murderbot and Mensah and how the lack of words for it reflects some very primate things.

trump can rile up the dead enders well enough, but he’s not saying anything new and he’s not even pretending to change course, and i suspect most voters in the midterms are going to know it. these rallies are going to be unproductive shitshows through the end of the month.

Do you ever wonder if men feel the same exhausted, contemptuous disgust we feel about our endless supply of violent worthless men? Or are they too busy being butthurt that someone would call any man worthless?

So far, investigators have not determined why former police Sgt. Kevin Mannix killed his wife, Ann Mannix, a former deputy chief, and their 24-year-old daughter.

Put a fork in the Republican Senate candidates in GA and NC. Rogers is hanging on by the thread in MI. Collins is in trouble in ME, so is Sullivan in AK. Paxton is clearly on the back foot. Kansas is in play. Graham is a weak candidate in SC, and nobody is quite sure about the state of play there.

Seems nearly certain that the DSA/DSA adjacent candidates will underperform the mainline Dems. I assume the DSA defense will be that the Dem Party didn’t give them enough support The socialists will complain that the capitalists didn’t give them enough money.

Yeah, but that's actually fairly solvable, kind of like how if someone started selling Everclear in the grocery store, we have a regulatory mechanism that can help, in a way that takes less political will than say, seizing every AR-15, which public health says we should also do.

Jen in Motion @jeninmotion.bsky.social · 14h
Most libertarian policy that I gut-level agree with is bad, actually. I think weed is the exception b/c where it's more or less legal, we regulate it as much or more than booze and that seems more or less right, down to homebrew/home-grow.

Not to minimise the impact of the Stonewall riots but like, there were a lot of extra steps between “we riot” and “everyone is free to live and love as they want”, and the struggle very much is not over.

It's fascinating because a lot of the ideas we had in the Daily Kos part of the Bush era proved to be disastrously wrong! I want to tell 2006 me that gambling bans are good and that yes, logically it makes no sense, but banning semi-automatics DID matter!

I can almost hear the misogyny nonsense whirling up. Anything to avoid admitting that Trumpers don't get what they want because they are offputting, untalented people who unjustly think they are better than most of us.

The pathology where our worst tech oligarchs see the gap, freak the fuck out and declare it doesn't exist and none of us are real like they are is particularly fascinating b/c it's clear they don't feel very secure about their own minds.
030
Jen in Motion @jeninmotion.bsky.social · 15h
One of the things that I think is particularly awful for Fed employees is that *DOGE always was doing shit like this* because they were a bunch of idiots who knew nothing of our complex federal government.
020
Jen in Motion @jeninmotion.bsky.social · 15h
I also think we are fascinated about that gap between our minds and others which is why kids about 8-10 all go through the "guess what I'm thinking about!" phase because the idea that there's a mind gap really screws with our primate brains.

A despairing scenario I’ve been confronted with repeatedly: won’t Dems come back to power, not fix every problem they inherited fast enough, and pave the way for another GOP comeback, like 2010 and 2024? Maybe! But the GOP is really burning up the foundations. 🧵 www.offmessage.net/p/post-donal...

This is exactly why I suspect OpenAI et al didn't go the boring but universal B2B route. The gains are real, I *really* think nerds like us underestimate the appeal of a conversational UI, but the gains do not make up for the cost for 90% of business users.

"Americans spend 5 billion dollars on pet food a year!" is the headline. So okay, there are 330 million Americans. The average American spends 15.15 on pet food a year, which is not actually that much. Large numbers make us stupid, which is why we don't get how much more a billion is than a million.

More to the point, none of this has a fucking thing to do with whether or not the U.S. has universal healthcare. The $3.3B in aid to Israel last year amounts to less than 0.3% of the annual cost of current Medicare *alone* & just 0.06% of total U.S. healthcare spending. www.cms.gov/data-researc...

I really got turned off by these tools because frankly, the first round of AI evangelism was like "ooh, it writes emails for me" and I'm like "sorry you're illiterate? why are you paid more than me?" plus Anthropic owes me $$ I'll never get. And the sheer ineptitude of Sr Director + galls.
