When you ask people about economic inequality, what crosses their minds? In a new open-access paper in Sociology, I asked 47 participants this question. Almost no one talked about money alone. Instead, they pointed to gender, race, visa status, language, and disability. 🧵👇

Paper prepared for the Dreiländertagung, 17–19 June 2026, Friedrichshafen, Germany
Abstract
How do citizens update their views of the state after direct encounters with public
administration? We study this question with a narrative vignette experiment
embedded in Novaland, a fictional virtual state in which participants experience
repeated service encounters. The design varies whether public services are delivered
effectively, poorly, or poorly with an option to pay a petty bribe. The results reveal
a tension that is central for public administration: poor service delivery increases
support for more spending in the affected domain, but this repair logic weakens
when poor delivery is accompanied by corruption. Repeated negative and corrupt
encounters do not generate broader demand for welfare spending, and corrupt
encounters substantially reduce trust in government. The paper contributes to
research on administrative performance, corruption, and citizen-state relations by
showing that citizens distinguish between capacity failures, integrity failures, and
broader evaluations of the state.

4/4: When do citizens accept political violence? We use a survey experiment in Germany to test if partisanship or prosocial cues weaken anti-violence norms. Good news: Norms are robust. Bad news: Those with "need for chaos" reject violence less. @conradziller.bsky.social Panel C9, Fri 14:00 👇
Boundary Conditions of Political Violence Acceptance:

Paper prepared for the Dreiländertagung, 17–19 June 2026, Friedrichshafen, Germany
Abstract
Political violence threatens democratic societies and most citizens reject political violence in
principle. This study investigates the boundary conditions of violence acceptance and asks
whether or not cues of partisan identity and prosocial behaviour may override anti-violence
commitments. Using a preregistered survey experiment in Germany, we manipulate a
hypothetical neighbour’s endorsement of political violence, partisan affiliation (AfD, Die
Linke, none), and prosocial behaviour. We find overall strong opposition to intended
political violence. Neither partisan in-group membership nor prosocial cues attenuate this
rejection. Instead, we find that individual predispositions matter: Respondents high in need
for chaos and those holding anti-democratic attitudes reject violence intentions significantly
less. LLM-assisted coding of open-ended responses reveals that violence rejectors invoke
democratic norms of non-violence, whereas violence acceptors rationalise it as freedom of
expression. The findings demonstrate that anti-violence norms in Germany remain robust
against contextual cues, but that democratic erosion at the individual level poses risks.

What explains Political Solidarity across Europe?
Novel Comparative Survey Evidence from Seven European Countries in 2026

Abstract
European democracies increasingly rely on citizen support for costly public redistribution, from welfare-state reform to responses to migration, pandemics, war, and demographic change. This paper asks what explains political solidarity, understood as citizens’ willingness to support public redistribution that benefits others. We develop a multilevel framework in which solidarity is shaped by individual foundations, social norms and state legitimacy, and objective regional and country contexts.

We test this framework using a new probability-based survey of 8,066 respondents in seven European countries in 2026, linked to regional and national indicators of governance, public-service quality, and economic context. We find substantial cross-national variation in political solidarity, broadly consistent with welfare-regime expectations, although the small number of country cases makes this evidence descriptive rather than a formal macro-level test.

The strongest evidence points to ideology and perceived state legitimacy. Respondents on the right are less supportive of political solidarity, while respondents who trust other people and institutions, perceive stronger contribution norms, and evaluate public services more positively are more willing to support redistribution for others. Perceived capacity to contribute and objective need or risk are also positively associated with solidarity. By contrast, objective socioeconomic resources, perceived personal risk, regional public-service quality, and relative regional income are not robust predictors in the full models. Overall, political solidarity appears to depend less on material position alone than on whether citizens regard the social and institutional environment as trustworthy, fair, and effective.

The image showed President Trump in a white and red robe, commonly used in renderings of Jesus Christ and in Scripture prophesying his return. Bright golden light, which is used to depict divine intervention in religious imagery, radiated from Mr. Trump’s hand as he touched the forehead of a sick man. A woman observed the scene with her hands steepled in prayer.

As he received two bags of a McDonald’s food delivery to the Oval Office on Monday morning, Mr. Trump told reporters that he did not catch all that religious imagery. He said he had thought the image he had posted to his Truth Social account had depicted him not as Jesus — but as a physician.
