Best quote I ever heard on this concept was: “Parents don’t have rights; they have responsibilities. Children have rights, which ‘parents rights’ groups seek to undermine.”

Fun fact: the phrase "out of pocket" comes from when pockets were invented in the 1980's by an Italian American in New Jersey name Luigi Fettucine. He would show off his invention by pulling an entire charcuterie board of cured meat from his pockets.

3) this is yet another instance of Vance treating a native-born but nonwhite American as if they are foreign born. 4) it is vance who should be greatful that anyone ever bothered to treat him like he might do some good in the world (they were wrong of course)

1) vance has this weird preoccupation with demanding that people show him gratitude 2) this is just another expression of the idea that some americans don’t count and at most should be seen and not heard

This is 100% wrong, to the degree of being criminal. I'm saying that as someone who has graduated law school and never been admitted to practice.

Wow. This explains so clearly so much of what I have experienced and am frustrated by in my career. Not being treated as if I bring a value or that the work I do is valuable is crushing. And it takes a huge amount of energy to ignore the slights day after day.

I legitimately want everyone in the boat strike chain with command responsibility to stand trial, and there is like maybe a 5% chance that occurs not because "feckless dems want to turn the page blah blah blah" but because arguing an OLC memo is not a stay out of jail card is gonna be hard as hell

On a similar but opposite note, data centers are going off grid and running MWs of small scale generators, natural gas and diesel, because it’s faster and easier. Even if extremely expensive.

Nellie Pou is running essential unopposed in my district, she’s running the most basic ads that (other than occasionally being in Spanish) could have run at any point in my life, the only opposition ads I’ve seen are transphobic and deeply absurd. And they never name a candidate.

My heart breaks for mathematicians whose lives and careers are being destroyed by AI — and especially this PhD student, who doesn’t even know he is a poet
Kai Shaikh, a Ph.D. student in mathematics at the University of Toronto, also currently at SLMath, observed that theorems are easy to use as benchmarks, but that they capture little of the wonderment at the heart of math. "Just like a photograph of a mile marker can't provide much of the value of actually going on a hike," he said,
"it would seem to me that proofs without stories, or even stories without struggle or mystery, and first glimpses of strange beasts, are not very meaningful or valuable to us humans."
