They just suck the life out of the game. The only one I like is the baseball pitch one — quick and easy.

Just get rid of them entirely. Games happened for years and years without them and everybody survived.

I would just like to note that the Allies started winning WW2 when they moved from naming their tanks after racist Confederate loser traitors (Stuart, Lee) to naming them after righteous Union winners (Sherman). The British caught on to this earlier, renamed the Lee the Grant, and never looked back.

There reallly are continuities over time — even centuries — with how various iterations of a country wage war.

Really put a damper on the matters at hand (as well as on my view of that particular department as a whole).

At my former university, I was on the Academic Life Committee that examined cases of academic dishonesty. A full professor in the business dept. on the committee said (paraphrasing) that almost all papers in his discipline were plagiarized so we should take it easy on students. So, that checks out.

Countries would never name things after criminals, traitors, or other scoundrels. Simply doesn’t happen.

Just look at the immense amount of scholarship on the German army — particularly in the East — published in the last 30 years. Any serious historian recognizes the criminality of the army and its men across an immense spectrum of war crimes.

"AfD, CDU ban new Holocaust 'stumbling stones' in Heidenau [ . . . ] The initiators of the Heidenau ban argue that, while remembering Holocaust victims is an essential task, the placement of stones leads to 'passersby walking over or even stepping onto the names of the victims.'" My thoughts below.

Appreciated this. I attended Martin H. Glynn school for fourth and fifth grade and played many a basketball game on its outside courts. Can't remember ever learning about the man in school, though (unlike Martin Van Buren).

Just so happens I’ve been looking at the fighting in Ukraine in late 1943 and I’d like to add this report from the commander of the 101st Jäger Division from December 1943:
A report on the German infantry from December 1943 detailing instances when German troops simply disobeyed orders for various combat missions from officers and NCOs.

Question for German historians: are there any English-language journal articles or book chapters on memory of the Nazi period and the Eagle’s Nest/Berchtesgaden that would be appropriate for an undergrad class? 🗃️ #skystorians

If a historian doesn’t revise previous history in their research, then that research is pointless because the entire purpose of research is the creation of new knowledge. There would be no need for history at all if we just repeated the same ideas a nauseam without adding any new information.

Class in the US is entirely a matter of aesthetics now. Rich suburban kids are “country”. Beard Dudes who look like they love IPAs are “working class.” Teachers who make $32,000 a year but have to dress up sort of nice in JCPenney clothes are “elites“. None of these words mean anything anymore.

In short, I want a society which treats anti-intellectualism, from the anti-humanities 'that's just book learnin' sort to the anti-vaxxers, with the sort of searing cultural contempt those choices and ideologies deserve. Because a grown-ass adult who believes that should feel shamed.

Anna Bikont once gave a talk at Wheeling Jesuit University about her book on the killings in Jedwabne. After meticulously detailing what happened (& the cover up), she took questions. The first comment was “but we Poles are such a friendly people. We would never do that.” Kinda proved her point.
