.@mind.org.uk's response to Reform's proposals to "cut PIP payments to people with anxiety" in this BBC News piece: bbc.co.uk/news/article... So much of the political debate around PIP betrays a complete lack of understanding of what the benefit is for, who gets it & how it's assessed
Quote from BBC News article: Mental health charity Mind's head of policy Tom Pollard said Reform's plan seemed muddled and did not appear to "bear any relation to how this benefit actually works", not least because PIP is not an out of work benefit.

"People have to prove they face significant health and disability-related barriers in their day-to-day lives to qualify for Pip, and it is not based on diagnosis," he said.

"Anxiety can have a debilitating impact, and many people will also have multiple and complex health issues when anxiety is recorded as their 'primary condition'."

Text: We have the evidence that austerity, inequality, cuts to support services, the cost of living crisis, work and housing insecurity are all driving the deterioration in the nation’s mental health. 📢Without action, families with children will see their incomes fall by the end of this Parliament. But our new analysis shows it doesn't have to be this way. Scrapping the two-child limit and adding a protected minimum floor into Universal Credit could reverse this trend. 🧵

Money and mental health problems can trap people in a vicious cycle. Financial pressure harms wellbeing, and poor mental health makes earning and managing money harder. It’s common – but not inevitable. 💜 We’re working for fairer systems and practical support to break this vicious cycle.
Graphic representing the cycle of money and mental health problems. Four rectangles connected to each other in a loop, saying: “Mental health problems → Mental health problems make it harder to earn, manage money and spending, and to ask for help → Financial difficulty → Financial difficulty causes stress and anxiety, made worse by collections activity or going without essentials.”

There's no point publishing a child poverty strategy that doesn't include lifting the 2 child limit. It's the single biggest driver of child poverty, which will continue to rise as long as it's in place. All the other good stuff can't counter such a strong driver.
