Start a new library of Anglican classics. Affordable but sturdy volumes, like the Loebs. New, up-to-date editions of Andrewes’s sermons, Taylor’s Holy Living, Hooker’s Lawes, etc. Like Davenant or Seminary St Press, but more prolific, and all in gilt-edged hardcover.

Hey, gang. Friendly reminder to try and say the Litany today as part of Morning Prayer. Say it with someone. With all that might loom over the head and the heart today, we could all use a mighty big drink of prayer.

Vida Scudder always hits the nail from 100 years ago 🕯️
If anything, however lovely and sacred, supplants in the soul the supreme desire for the Living God, it cuts life at the root, and though the plant may seem green and fresh for a time, slow death is on the way. There is reason to fear that modern social feeling has these bad tendencies. The quest for union with God is a stern and fearsome thing, and men seek always facile substitutes. So they try to replace this quest by a vague humanitarian ardor, press the truth that laborare est orare to the point of eliminating orare altogether, and make a religion out of ministering to the poor and working for social justice.

When they feel the need for more contemplation, as everybody does at times, they betake them if they can to the great woods and relax pleasantly as they enjoy Nature. These people are repeating in modern fashion the specious error of the old "Quietists," whom Ruysbroek so dreaded in the 14th century… “They enter into rest through mere nature… and this rest may be found within themselves by all creatures, without the grace of God…” A condition like this is lamentable and superficial.

Again, seconded. You could spend a year in the wilderness admiring great beaut, but you might never encounter God. Certainly you would never know His character.

Yes! Creation reflects the glory of God, but neither Christ nor the prophets taught us pantheism. God and His Creation are distinct, and that is a good thing.

Political violence is bad. It usually begets more political violence. Celebrating political violence is bad. It usually encourages more political violence, against various targets. Campus shootings are bad. They make everyone on campus less safe. It's bad that what I wrote here is controversial.

A tad elaborate and Marian for my tastes, but still, what a beautiful altar. That painting in the middle panel is 15th century, according to the plaque. @flinthill.bsky.social just celebrated a small but serene communion here about an hour ago. Our cathedral in Buffalo is an under-appreciated gem.

Can we as Anglicans suspend using the term “via media” until we all agree what the heck it actually means. If you come in here and say “it means between Rome and Geneva,” I will block you and mail you an envelope full of glitter.

Does anyone know of any Anglican Church of Canada parishes along the Niagara Frontier that do 1962 BCP communion on Sundays? My wife and I are going over there for our first anniversary next weekend, and I’d like to find somewhere that does a traditional service.

On this Transfiguration of our Lord, the 2nd lesson at Morning Prayer is 2 Corinthians 3, concluding with the Apostle declaring "we all ... are changed into the same image from glory to glory". In his commentary on the passage, Calvin describes "this restoration":

By thy gift, O Lord, we are set on fire, and are borne aloft: we burn, and we are on the way. We climb the ascents that are in the heart. With thy fire, with thy good fire, we burn and go on, for we go up to the peace of Jerusalem. --Augustine ⚓

An image of St. Peter and St. Paul standing side by side with halos. Over the image is the collect (prayer) for their feast day from the Book of Common Prayer (1979), “Almighty God, whose blessed apostles Peter and Paul glorified you by their martyrdom: Grant that your Church, instructed by their teaching and example, and knit together in unity by your Spirit, may ever stand firm upon the one foundation, which is Jesus Christ our Lord; who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.” At the bottom of the image is the shield of the Episcopal Church. A olive green/light drab color gradient has been applied to the image.

Really saddened to hear of the death of Alfred Brendel (1931-2025), a celebrated classical pianist and one of my favorites. His style was controlled but gentle, humane, and often humorous. This recording of him playing Beethoven’s “Emperor” Concerto 5 remains a classic: youtu.be/76DXQLbXEks?...

I think it important to consider that God does not “undo” Babel on Pentecost—he uses it, rather; he transforms the brokenness into diversity and color. This is the same way He overcame death: He did not abolish it altogether, but robbed it of its sting by using it as the crucible of His glory.
