On Thanksgiving, the immigrant children held at the Dilley detention center gathered in the gym for what they thought was a holiday feast. The kids salivated over a spread of turkey, sandwiches, pastries and pies, a family told me. But the food wasn’t for detainees — it was for the staff.

On Nov. 16, a mental health counselor recorded in Kamilla’s medical records that her mother reported the girl had lost her appetite after being “served food that contained worms.”

A week later, the couple said, children were told to gather in the gym for what they believed would be a Thanksgiving celebration. Excitement spread as families saw tables set with turkey, sandwiches, pastries and pies, they said. The children waited expectantly. But when a parent asked when the celebration would begin, Oksana said, staff told them the holiday meal was for employees, not detainees.

The children, she said, watched despondently as the feast was packed away.

I love this analytical take on video game categorization from Antoine Mayerowitz and Julie Belzanne: hushcrasher.substack.com/p/taxonomy-o... Instead of trying to vibe-intuit the definition of an "indie" game, the authors analyzed the data from the perspective of game size and credits length

Oh of course. “Works better” was a poor way to word it. The medium of videos when discussing animation/film has the benefit of being able to show them in motion. I tend to prefer this but that doesn’t make it better. Been a bit since I had a word limit that I need to relearn to be short and precise

While death is the major focus of the show I think there’s a lot there for younger people. I think it may vary but for me the themes of learning to connect more with people and learn from those you’ve lost was universal. Tho I’d be lying if the animation didn’t carry the show for most people I know

I always felt discouraged to ask questions during class. While I know many professors want students to interact it is super hard to interrupt not just the teacher but all the students that are also attending. I’ve been able to learn far more in smaller classes where it feels more open to questions
