The Seed Song

A chipping sparrow is humming to itself while hopping around a forest floor in early spring. New plants are sprouting through fallen years from the year before. Zoom in on the bird in the second panel as it sings "I never had a seed that I didn't like / dry ones hard ones sharp ones even taste alright / if you don't eat them fast, they turn into a grass! / if you let them be, they become a tree!" It stops to munch on some morsels of sparrow food, whatever that is, at the base of a plant that towers over its head. It looks up and up. The final frame is zoomed out to see the top of the plant, which is a trillium. The sparrow cheerily says "Good morning!". And that's how you make a comic!

Varo, a sylvari mesmer, stands in-between parted, see-through curtains. His bark is a pale coral, and the white foliage on his head is shimmering with opalescent magic. His red eyes are bright as he looks at the camera with a slight smile. Around Varo, magic dissolves in swirls of illusory shards and streams as he dismisses his glamour. Behind him, a vast desert stretches beyond the horizon, glowing golden with the afternoon sun.

A tall, androgynous sylvari stands in with their arms wrapped loosely around their upper torso. Their bark is a dark mossy green, and their foliage, styled like a mullet, is a dull beige. Their keen, lilac eyes are looking to the side.
Their clothing is composed of overlapping layers of leaves that vary in different shades of green, which shift in sunset hues at the elbows, and to lilac at their wrists. Vines in the same lilac shade curl about their form, with their leafy ends wrapping around their back and extending over their shoulders, pointing upwards like a mantle.
The background is an edit of the Landscape (1890 - 1925) painting by Magnus Enckell.

Two charr keep night watch, standing side-to-side on a cliff overlooking Orr. Arventia, the charr further away from the viewer, is dressed in leather armor with a fur collar. Her fur is a powdery grey, which fades to russet on her tail, limbs, and muzzle. She looks off into the distance, her maw slightly ajar as she speaks, her expression solemn. Vestris stands closer to the viewer, don in an intimidating set of heavy armor. Her helmet is made with jagged plates of metal arranged into a tri-horn shape, with the longest horn extending from the forehead like a sabre. Her fur, barely visible because of her attire, is white with grey tiger stripes, and her mane is messy and braided in places. Vestris looks sidelong at the viewer, her intense orange eye sharp and defiant.

the discourse on what jobs are acceptable to replace with generative AI reveals a lot about what we think of other people's jobs

recently my friend's comics professor told her that it's acceptable to use gen AI for script-writing but not for art, since a machine can't generate meaningful artistic work. meanwhile, my sister's screenwriting professor said that they can use gen AI for concept art and visualization, but that it won't be able to generate a script that's any good. and at my job, it seems like each department says that AI can be useful in every field except the one that they know best.

It's only ever the jobs we're unfamiliar with that we assume can be replaced with automation. The more attuned we are with certain processes, crafts, and occupations, the more we realize that gen AI will never be able to provide a suitable replacement. The case for its existence lies on our ignorance of the work and skill required to do everything we don't.
